1967 Plymouth GTX 440 4-Speed for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2) based on 481 votes
Note: I have lowered the reserve from the previous listing.

The car is in excellent condition and has always been stored in a separate garage with a cover. It has been driven once or twice a month to keep it in good working order and it has been lovingly cared for. It has been adult driven. so it has never been raced. driven hard. or driven in the rain. I purchased the car from a seller who said the drive train was original. but it is not. The engine runs smooth with a nice lope and plenty of power. Read more about the drivetrain below.

HISTORY
The car is 1 of 2. 86 Plymouth Belvedere GTXs made with a 4-speed transmission. This is a special order car that was shipped to Carolina Chrysler-Plymouth in Charlotte. North Carolina on December 19. 1966. The build date is December 27. 1966. but build dates are production estimates. I pulled the title history from the North Carolina DOT and the has car spent it's entire life in the Charlotte area until I brought it to Georgia in 2006.

RESTORATION
The restoration was done by a previous owner. It began in 1998 when the engine and transmission rebuilt. It had a rotisserie restoration that was completed in 2001. The original color is red with no stripes. but it was restored in yellow with black stripes. He put 79 miles on it when I purchased it in March of 2006. Since then I have driven it 2. 77 miles and it runs smooth and doesn't burn any oil.

The car was 90% restored when I bought. but I have added NOS parts. restored original parts and aftermarket reproduction parts. I also restored it as a “Day Two” type restoration; meaning I added bolt-on parts that could have been added back in the late 1960's and I purchased parts from that era to keep it as true to an original as possible.

1. Stewart Warner Green Line Tachometer (NOS production date May 1967) $350
2. Stewart Warner 2” Green Line Gauges
    Oil Gauge 80psi: (360DB L6) production date June 1967 (NOS) $100
    AMP Meter: 60-0-60 (359CE L8) production date August 1967 (NOS) $115
Water Pressure Gauge: (361AT L4) production date April 1967 (NOS) $85
Stewart Warner Gauge Cluster Plate (NOS) $40
3. Hurst Classic Shifter (I have original Inland shifter)
4. FlowMaster mufflers
Other original parts I added or restored:
1. Headlight bezels. hood trim. trunk finish panel by All Trim Plus. The only true restorer of original Mopar parts (Cost $3. 00)
2. Triple Chromed original tail light bezels ($2. 00)
3. Restored/Rechromed Bullet Turn Signal Indicators ($275)
4. Restored original washer bottle/washer pump ($50)
5. Repainted Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner
6. Map Light
7. Instrument Knobs
8. NOS AM Radio
9. Add a rebuilt Carter AVS carburetor from a ‘69 Charger with a 440 (I have an NOS Carter AFB still in the box that is specific to this GTX model. It is available. but not included with this sale).

Aftermarket parts added:
1. Washer line kit
2. All required decals (air cleaner. under hood. driver door. trunk)
3. Gas tank and filler seal.
4. Various hoses. clamps. plugs. seals

AWARDS
The car has been entered in five judged car shows since 2006. Four were “Mopar Only” and one that had a “Mopar Class”. Of the five. the car won two “Best of Class”. nbsp; one “Second Place” and one “Best Mopar” trophy.

MILEAGE
The odometer shows 49. 75 miles. The previous owner believed it was true and listed the mileage as 46. 98 miles at purchase. but there is no way to verify it and I doubt it is actual since it had a rotisserie restoration.

EXTERIOR
The overall condition of this GTX is excellent. There are no visible flaws or rust and it looks better than it did when it came off the showroom floor. I've owned it over four years and never washed it. I wipe it down with a clean damp cloth. dry it and wipe on detailer. The vinyl top is in excellent condition. All rubber and seals are soft and pliable in like new condition. If you are familiar with ‘67 GTXs the hood scoops are nonfunctional.

PAINT
The original color is PP1 bright red with no stripes. The current color is RR1 yellow with black stripes.

BRIGHT WORK
The headlight bezels. hood trim. trunk finish panel were purchased from All Trim Plus (Cost $3. 00. 00). They are the only shop I know of that still uses the correct formula for the argent textured paints. The front grill shows some minor wear. The bumpers have been rechromed. The sill plates and rocker panels are new and drip rails show some wear from normal use. The bullet turn signal indicators were added (on fender tag) by me. I purchased original ones that were restored and rechromed.

GLASS
The front windshield is not original. but all other glass appear to be original with the Pentastar logo on them. The sides windows are in good condition. including the triangular pop-out windows. There are some minor scratches on the rear and side window glass.

SUSPENSION/UNDERCARRIAGE
Police package suspension with torsion bars and extra leaf springs in back. It rides and drives very smooth for the beefed up suspension. The undercarriage is completely clean. This car has never been driven in the rain. mud or snow since the restoration.

DRIVETRAIN
Engine (Casting No. 2536430. Casting Date 10/5/66)
Trans Casting No. s (Left Side) C 95664 Z. (Right Side) C 97372. (Tail Shaft) C-96707J
Rear end Dana 60 3. 54/3. 55 (8 3/4). Sure Grip
The engine casting number shows it as a “440 RB 1966-72”. The stamp on the engine pad is “C440” not “C440 HP”. That indicates that it is a 1967 440 block. and the Super Commando engine had the “HP” added. There is a “1 10 2” under the main stamp on the pad. but I do know what it stands for. I do not know what the previous owner performed or installed in the engine rebuild. The engine idles smooth with a nice lope and plenty of power. The cast iron intake has been polished for increased flow. The previous owner replaced the carburetor with a Carter AVS from a ‘68 383 auto. I replaced it with a rebuilt 1969 Carter AVS made for a 440 motor (stamped: 09  4640SA). I do have an NOS Carter AFB No. 4326 still in the box. but it is not included in this sale. Manual transmission is tight and shifts with no issues. but I could not find info based on the casting numbers.

EXHAUST
Original exhaust manifolds with FlowMaster mufflers.

ELECTRICAL
All the electrical works and a Mopar electronic ignition was added in 2008.

INTERIOR
Bucket seats with the center arm rest. Excellent condition with replaced headliner. kick panels. window cranks and these NOS or original used parts added: Steering wheel center cap. Instrument knobs and map light. The interior has the unique smell of an old car. I was told it is an original interior. but I don't know if the seats have been recovered or not.

TRUNK
The trunk is very clean and the original lighting works and is in intact. The jack. handle. base and spring are intact and working. The jack instructions decal is on the inside deck lid.

STEERING/TIRES/BRAKES
Power steering with stock magnum 500 rims with standard size radial Coker Classic red line tires that still have the tire nubs on them. Drum brakes all the way around. The fender tag shows disc brakes on the front.

CONVENIENCE UPGRADES
1. Vintage Air (I have original heater box)
2. Mopar Electronic Ignition (brown cap so it looks original)

KNOWN ISSUES
1. The instrument lights are dim. The rheostat can be repaired or replaced. You can see the instruments at night. but it is dimmer than it should be.
2. There is a small exhaust leak on the right side at the exhaust manifold. I replaced the left exhaust gasket and I have the gasket for the right. but have not replaced it yet.
3. After driving. the car typically drips 2-3 drops of oil from the rear main seal. It has the old rope seal which are notorious for this. It started after driving it 500+ miles and the amount has not increased.
4. The AM radio is not good at receiving stations.
