The Bristol 400 was the first motorcar of the Bristol Aeroplane
Company. After World War II. BAC decided to diversify and formed a
car division. which would later be the Bristol Cars company in its
own right. BAC subsequently acquired a licence from Frazer Nash to
build BMW models. Bristol chose to base its first model on the best
features of two outstanding pre-war BMWs. namely the 328's engine. br/>and the 326's frame. These were covered with a neat all-steel body. br/>inspired on BMW 327's. The Bristol 400 featured a slightly modified
version of BMW's six-cylinder. 1. 71cc engine. This engine. br/>considered advanced for its time due to its hemispherical
combustion chambers and very short inlet and exhaust ports. br/>developed 80hp at 4. 00 rpm and could carry the 400 to a top speed
of around 92 mph with acceleration to match.

Little is known of the early history of this example of Bristol's
sporting coupé. It was discovered in a locked garage where it has
lain for some twenty years. It was then moved to the current
owner's residence in West Sussex approximately five years ago. The
Bristol Owners Club records detail the original factory colour to
be yellow with the addition of a 404 crown wheel and pinion. The
body. whilst obviously requiring painting. appears sound throughout
and the interior elements all seem to be present. either in situ or
in boxes. The engine has been removed and in place is now a
Standard Six motor. It is not running although the car rolls on its
wheels. Inspection is recommended but this example represents an
early Bristol project with enormous potential.
