1927 STUDEBAKER ERSKINE MUSEUM CAR 28. 00 actual miles

One of the best preserved cars from this period to survive.

This is a model made by Studebaker from 1927 to 1930.   Sold new 87 years ago to a Doctor in Vancouver. Washington.   It was used from 1927 to 1932. then garaged stored on blocks until 1956 when the original owner's son used it for the summer.   The car still retains its 1956 license plate from the last time it was used.   Up to this time the car had accumulated 28. 00 miles.   Oddly it was driven out to the family farm and stored by hanging it from the rafters of the barn to guard against moisture. vandalism and rodent damage.   Seems like a strange way to store a vehicle but goodness did it work.

Upon acquiring the car we removed the existing fuel and put in fresh leaded gas.   The oil was changed and put in a new oil filter.   The plugs. fan belt. spark plug wires and radiator hoses are very old but perform fine.   The motor compartment was original and never touched.   We cleaned and found paint to match how it came from the factory.   The original wiring is in good shape and works well.   The transmission and rear end are exceptional.   A very rare original correct rebuilt carburetor was found from an expert specializing in early cars.   The 6 cylinder motor is amazing.   It runs like a watch. starts easily. no noise and not a wisp of blue smoke.   It is even quiet with the original muffler system.

The top insert on the roof is still in good condition with no tears or leaks.   The interior is very well preserved.   The rear seat bottom cushion and headliner we replaced correct to this car.   The rest of the interior is as it came from the factory.   The wood steering wheel is well preserved but needs refastening at the seam by a well qualified wood crafter.   Several window cranks have disintegrated and need replacing.   The windows all roll up and down fine and the original glass is outstanding.

The paint is the most amazing story of this car.   Many collector friends who have looked at this have all said this is the best original 87 year old paint on any car from this period.   This car had a dark film on it that was not oxidation.   It took untold hours polishing it off.   It was hard as a rock.   What materialized was astounding.   It has some minor flaws but very few cars could have survived like this.   We re-plated only three parts; the tail light. head light rings and radiator shell in nickel plate.

The wheels are remarkably original with the factory pinstripes and Allstate tires that hold air with no leaks.   The pinstripes on the car itself are nearly all intact.

There is no rust in this car.   Even the bottom of the battery box is in nice condition.   Under the fenders is still good factory black paint.   It has all the original tools in the original cloth wrapping.

This is a nice piece for a museum to illustrate preservation.
