1970 RHD VW T2 (Tin Top) Early Bay For Sale

Well… as much as it pains me to write this my circumstances have now changed, and it is time to let my beloved early bay go.

I may be biased but in my view this is the pinnacle of all bay window busses being a RHD, Wide 5 stud, Tin Top (possibly apart from a factory deluxe twin slider with sunroof?). It originally rolled off the production line in October 1969 as a Lotus White Kombi and was registered in 1970. Over the years it appears to have had at least x2 changes of colour, Montana or Chianti red and the duck egg blue it is in currently.

The Good!

·         It's a RHD Early Bay Tin Top (just in case you weren't aware)

·         The Roof and Gutters are good! One small spot to treat (no welding) in the middle and that is it!

·         The cab doors and tailgate are equally very good.

·         Underneath is generally solid! I understand from the previous owner that he had all welding done that was required. The centre belly pan is still intact and the x2 outer ones only recently removed to facilitate this work so hasn't been messed with too much.

·         Mechanically good! It has a Webber Progressive Carb (Genuine not EMPI), filter king and electronic fuel pump. All fuel Lines recently replaced and had it tuned by a professional on a Dyno! Oddly it is also the first Vdub I have owned that hasn't marked its territory on the drive so no oil leaks either.

The Bad!

·         Er…. The bodywork. It is very much a case of what you see are the problems you have got, I genuinely believe there are no hidden nasties. So lower 6” along sides, both lower rear corners, Battery Tray, Sliding door rail trim clip, The engine lid has a few spots but is salvageable and the sliding door will need a lower skin doing (for the second time by the looks of it?), A small area on cargo floor by O/S rear wheel tub and whatever needs addressing under all that deseaming filler.

·         Depending on how “concourse” you want to go you might want to address the recent previous “plate” repairs?.... as said, I do believe the underneath to be solid although the repairs are not the prettiest.

·         The “early” Bakelite fuse box has done what they all seem to do and split in half. I have a very clean 1971 box to replace it with, just need rewiring. While messing with this something did short that caused main beam not to work anymore so may need a light switch or relay?

The Ugly!

·         All that filler! Whoever is responsible for deseaming this bus should be strung up and shot! I'm sorry “it was all the rage in the 80's and 90's” is not an acceptable excuse! I didn't like it then and like it even less now. Anyway.

Extras

As mentioned, I am happy to throw in the good 1971 fuse box with the sale along with a Maypole car cover although I do also have a few bits I will give the purchaser 1st refusal on if it is of interest to them (at extra cost). If not, I will advertise separately on completion on sale.

·         A brand new (still wrapped) full width “Rusty Lee” rock and roll bed frame (value £280)

·         A new "boxed" High Powered (75A) chrome alternator and stand (value £150)

·         X4 new (still wrapped) replacement whitewall tyres (value over £400)

·         A very clean low mileage genuine VW RHD sliding door mechanism (these are not easy to find!) (est. value £100)

·         And the best bit…. A complete spare RHD clock console with…. A genuine VW Deluxe Clock! (these are like Hens Teeth!!! est value £300)

If you have any questions, require more pic's (I have lots!) or would like to come to view please feel free to contact me and if you have read this far then thank you for your consideration and good luck.
