1964 Humber Super Snipe Series IV, Beautiful car, Lots Spent, Ready to go!

Up for sale is this utterly gorgeous Humber Super Snipe Series IV from 1964. Rootes Group's luxury barge, (which surely has to be the most upmarket car of its time without getting into Rolls Royce territory?), these are simply wonderful cars, and still represent a total bargain for the amount of car that you get! This example has had vast amounts of money spent on it, including a completely rebuilt engine and rebuilt braking system in recent years, and it drives as well as it looks. The series IV has to be the best looking model of Super Snipe, still retaining the wrap-around rear window, but with the quad headlights and the slightly breathed on 3 litre engine, making it a fair bit pokier than earlier models.

The car presents itself very nicely indeed, and its sage green paintwork comes up beautifully, really suiting the gorgeous lines of the car. All the panel gaps are nice, and the doors all close with a reassuring ‘thunk'. The massive amount of chromework looks very good too, with only small bits of flakiness here and there. Whilst the paintwork is not perfect, and there are areas that could be tidied up; small amounts of bubbling, or evidence of filler having been used many years ago, there is certainly nothing that I feel really detracts from the overall look of the car, and if it were mine, nothing at all that I would be in any rush to rectify. In fact, as long as the car was garaged, there's nothing that I would expect to get any worse in the coming years at all. I do not feel that the photos unduly flatter the car, so please do scroll down and have a look for yourself. The underside of the car looks very solid indeed, and the car has always been waxoyled, with receipts to prove, along with the rest of the huge history file that comes with it!

The interior is a magnificent place to be! How I love to see a car wearing its original leather with pride, and whilst there are small tears here and there, the seats have a wonderful patina, and are so incredibly comfy. You really feel that you could happily jump in it and drive to the south of France (or have your chauffeur take you..) in total comfort, and they do of course smell fantastic. The carpets are newer, and in very good condition, and the acres of polished walnut are in very good order. In the back, the tray tables are all present and correct, as are the wonderfully engineered pull-out ashtrays and cigar lighter in the back of the front seat. Under the bonnet it is beautifully clean and tidy, and the flat-top Six engine looks incredibly impressive under there with its polished rocker cover. There has been a battery cut-off switch fitted too, which is always a nice addition to a classic for a little more peace of mind.

On the road, the car behaves beautifully, with plenty of power, and an automatic gearbox that changes up and down when you want it to, and without any fuss! The car has been treated to a brand new set of matching tyres (and newly shot-blasted and powder-coated wheels too), and it feels very sure footed, even on the motorway. The servo assisted brakes work very well too, and the car stops and locks up cleanly and in a straight line. There is no power steering, but once on the road it is more than light enough to not be missed. The horn doesn't appear to be working currently, but we will endeavour to get this sorted out before the car heads to its new owner.

All in all, this really is a wonderful thing, and gets admiring looks wherever it goes. We have enjoyed every second of having it here, and it has never let us down in the many miles we have done in it. To call these cars a poor man's Rolls Royce is really doing them quite a disservice - I really do feel you'd be hard pushed to find a more luxurious classic at any price range, let alone well below £10k. Parts availability is still good, and the owner's club is well worth joining too. She is not a perfect car, (and I certainly hope the description and photos haven't painted that picture), but she is a car that you could use, enjoy and take to shows with a great deal of pride, and as I said above, if it were mine I wouldn't be doing a thing to it other than routine maintenance to keep her just as she is. 

The car is located in Halifax, although nationwide delivery is available at incredibly reasonable prices, so please don't hesitate to get in touch for a quote. Whilst I feel I have described and photographed the car as accurately and honestly as I can, there is of course no substitute for seeing the car in the flesh. As with any old car, there may of course be small problems that we are not aware of, or may come to light as time goes on. I would always prefer the car to be fully inspected first before any money changing hands, to ensure that you are totally happy. The car is of course sold as seen, with no warranty implied or given.
