GAZ M13 Chaika from Soviet Union

RESTORATION NOTES

The car restored on archival materials in an earlier series of the 1958-59 year.

This car was black when I bought it and was in very bad condition. Somebody tried to restore it. so the car was spotted putty. touch upped. dismantled.

First. I began work on the engine and chassis. and install a manual gearbox.

I have planned a full restoration in the original. but did not like the black color. So I decided to do a two-tone car in an early episode. Since then. over 7 years I collect material on the history of the GAZ- 13 Chaika.

Made the first exit after a year of active jobs (in 2003) I immediately went to Moscow from Kiev to «Autoexotics Auto Show». Interior works was completed the day before the departure. Upon arrival. again actively began to finish the car. I must say that the car is on the little things so far. Restoration never ends :)

This «Seagull» frequent participant and winner of international vintage rallies and festivals in Ukraine and Russia.

In 2004. in the Moscow «Autoexotics Auto Show» VIII my car was nominated: «The best restoration of domestic vehicles». This year's planned visits to several retro festivals in Finland and Sweden.

In the process of restoration I had to collect the crumbs in different cities and countries. a lot of information on the technical differences and the history of GAZ 13 Chaika. In the end. it all gradually formed in a thick monograph on the history of the GAZ- 13 Chaika :)

. Chaika production consisted of two generations. The mark 1 Chaika. the GAZ M 13. was produced from 1959 to 1981. and is the more famous and more numerous with more than 3. 00 examples built during the 22 year production run. The M 13 was powered by a 195 horsepower (145 k W) 5. 5 L

As a

limousine

-class car. Chaikas were available only to the Soviet government. and could not be purchased by the average citizens. However. citizens were allowed to rent Chaikas for weddings. Chaikas were one step down from the more prestigious ZIL limousines. and were issued to top professionals. party officials. scientists. academics. and other VIPs.

For their larger size and more powerful V 8. Chaikas were also ordered in some quantity by the

KGB

.

Nikita Khrushchev

. although entitled to a ZIL. was known to prefer Chaikas. and kept an M 13 at his summer

dacha

. Top speed was 99 mph (158 km/h).

Although most Chaikas were

sedans

. both generations were also produced in 4-door

convertible

form. primarily for parade use. The M 13 convertible. or M 13 b. was built for only two years 1961 and 1962. The M 14 b lasted longer. introduced in 1982. it ran to the end of Chaika production in 1988.

A

station wagon

version. the M 13 A Universal. was produced for a few years in the 1960 s and is the lowest-volume Chaika variant. Many of the wagons were converted to

or

funeral car

duty.
