1974 Volkswagen 1303S Big Beetle. Under 17000 miles from new.

The word rare is used far too often on ebay but I think in this case its use is justified.

I realize that calling a car that sold 21million units rare might seem strange but this 1303 “S” or Big Beetle is a rare survivor for the following reasons.

1.       1. It's a 1303. Lets face it a model that was never popular for whatever reason even though it had superior handling and superior levels of comfort.

2. It is the very top of the range making it the expensive version of a cheap car so not many were sold in this specification.  

      3. This particular car is now almost 40 years old and has never seen the hot end of a welder.

4. The odometer is showing just 16970* miles from new. that means this car has only covered an average of 430miles per year since it was built.

So what's the story. I was offered this car from a collection back in August and I had to have it. It had been in a garage and hadn't moved since it was last MOT'd in 2006 by the son of the original owner. I had the intention of hiding it away for a rainy day but I have now lost the use of the garage I was storing my 1967 beetle project so this car would need to live outside and I cant bring myself to do that so best to sell it on in the hope that somebody can preserve it properly.

When I collected it I took along a battery and some fuel. With a prime of the carb and a set of jump leads we had her running within about 10 minutes then loaded onto a friends recovery truck and taken for an MOT.

The car initially failed on a rear offside indicator bulb not working and the horn not working. Both of these things were fixed with a shoogle then a quick clean of the contacts… Job done.

All the 1303 S/ Big Beetle parts are there. cord inserts on the seats. leather effect steering wheel. wood effect dashboard. wooden gear lever. carpets. rear parcel shelf. 5. 5 inch GT wheels. 1600cc engine and a taller 4th gear in the gearbox.

 There has been an AM/LW Blaupunkt radio added to the dash. This is a 70's correct accessory and the wood effect blanking panel for the dash is still with the car.

 Due to the laquer peeling. a common problem with 1970's metallic paint. the outside of the car has had a very good re-spray in the past but the inside has not been touched and just look at that spare wheel well…. Incredible.

The colour is Moosmetallic L95c (Moss green) as shown by the paint code sticker still present on the front inner wing.

I could go on describing this car but the best thing to do is come and see it. If this is what you are looking for you will not be disappointed. it even smells like a beetle should.
