Another rolling example of Depression-era elegance and class has rolled in to MotoeXotica Classic Cars. We are proud to present this 1934 Pierce-Arrow 1240A Five-Passenger Sedan. Only 287 examples were made that year and they started at $3. 95. a heady sum in the midst of the Great Depression. This car was delivered new to the Bangor. Maine area in 1934. Reportedly. it was stored in 1941. just prior to World War II. due to gas and tire rationing. After the war the car was used sparingly and in 1954 it was stored away again until it was purchased by an antique car dealer Norman Spear from Bridgton Maine in 1969. In July of 1970 Mr. Schofield from Richmond Virginia responded to a classified ad place by Spear and he purchased the car and brought it back to Richmond with him. At the time the Pierce was painted black and Mr. Schofield had full intentions to restore the Pierce back to original colors. He wrote a letter with a current photograph to the president of the Pierce Arrow Society Bernie Weis and requested proper colors for his Pierce Arrow so he could start his restoration (copy of letter is included).
In the early 70's Mr. Schofield started to restore the Pierce Arrow but he passed away during the work and the car was then put up for sale during the auction of his estate. Richard Blissit of Oklahoma purchased the Pierce Arrow from the gentleman who purchased it from the estate and he had it brought to his shop in Tulsa Oklahoma. Mr. Blissett began disassembling the Pierce for an eventual full restoration in the near future. Over the next few years he lost interest in the restoration and in 1977 he called Forrest Garb of Oak Point Texas for a trade. Forrest restored Model A's and T's and Mr. Blissit wanted to trade the fully dissembled but complete Pierce Arrow for a good Ford Model A. They both agreed on the deal and Mr. Garb brought the Pierce home to Dallas Texas where his 15 year old daughter immediately fell in love with the dissembled Pierce. She asked her father if they could use the Pierce in her wedding when she gets married some day and father said yes. This promise eventually became the stimulus for completing the extensive and correct restoration of this Pierce Arrow.
Over the course of the next few years the restoration was moving slow but consistent but in 1984 things got exciting. Mr. Garb's daughter is now a senior in college. when she walks in with a tall. handsome young engineer who asks for her hand in marriage. "Daddy. do you remember I wanted to use the Pierce Arrow in my wedding? Well. I haven't changed my mind. " Mr. Garb only had 11 months now to fully complete the restoration for the wedding. He spent every evening. all his weekend. holidays and vacation to get the car done. and drove it to the first tank of gas only four days before the wedding! And he cut no corners. all new correct upholstery. all the wood graining and wood was refinished. new carpet. new glass. chrome work and new silk screened instruments! The restoration was an success and was used in the wedding! We have located some photos of that important day with the Pierce and are located in the photo gallery of our ad. Also included is a full story written by Mr. Garb on full detail about his experience restoring the Pierce Arrow and that story was published in the Pierce Arrow Society 2002 newsletter and the Classic Car Club Of America North Texas Region newsletter Vol. XIV number 4. both copies are included.
Mr. Garb owned the Pierce Arrow until 2006 when it was sold and eventually found its way to a Classic Car enthusiast Mr. Wenger of St. Louis Missouri. In 2009 the Pierce was in need of another extensive restoration and was managed by Mr. Wegner and his experience restoring grand classic cars of the 30' and 40's. For the next four years the Pierce had a full correct restoration with the stunning result on what you see today! Included are all the receipts. technical notes and manuals that Mr. Wenger used to restore this classic. After completion the Pierce Arrow was sold to Mr. Wenger's local friend and Classic Car Collector John Porbeck who already had a fine collection of Pierce Arrows. In 2016 Mr. Porbeck passed away and we acquired the car from his estate.
Finished in Cape Maroon with medium gray accents and vermilion pinstriping. the paint and exterior trim are in near-excellent condition. The glass panes are clear and crack-free and the lights. including the optional cowl lights. are in good order. This car rolls on wide whitewall tires with factory wheel covers. All of the body panels are solid and straight. including the roof with its rubberized surface. The engine bay is very tidy and the bumpers are in very good order.
Under that vee-shaped hood is the correct 462 CID V-12 engine. which breathes through dual Stromberg carburetors and is backed by a three-speed manual transmission. Just outside of that hood are dual horns and dual side-mounted spare tires with covers.
Inside. the car's gray upholstery with blue accents is in very good shape. Overall. the carpet is in good shape while the headliner is in very good order. The burled walnut instrument panel. with its full instrumentation. is in fine condition. as is the three-spoke steering wheel and inner door panels. The windowsills are made of the same type of wood as the instrument panel. The mirror glass and shift lever are in good order. Rounding out the interior is a list of hand-written starting instructions affixed to the instrument panel.
