1955 Austin A90 Westminster for sale
Current customer rating:
Looking for style with performance this summer. this A 90 Westminster Deluxe in Spruce Green has all of it in spades not to mention two-tone leather and lots of chrome! Restored around 20-years ago. this glorious-sounding six cylinder saloon comes with substantial history and is ready to be immediately enjoyed. Go on. treat yourself !
The A 90 Westminster was launched at the London Motor Show in 1954 and featured radical new styling for Austin with a high-wasted design. much use of chrome detailing and a BMC C-Series 2639 cc straight 6 engine with single Zenith carburettor capable of 85 bhp. Indeed. it was the first time that the company had put a six cylinder engine into a medium capacity class since the end of the war. With a top speed of 85 mph. this was a super-smooth boardroom on wheels. particularly in Deluxe trim with full leather interior with front and rear arm-rests and standard-fit heater. In A 90 form. the car ran for just 2 years with around 25. 00 units built before the short-booted A 95 entered production to be swiftly superseded by the longer-wheelbase A 105.
Our Deluxe example in Spruce Green with two-tone Green and Cream leather interior is now a rare survivor of what was a highly popular family saloon. We know little of it`s early history but have much paperwork from 1992-1994 when evidently the car was restored and subsequently shown on the circuit. The paper-trail goes quiet until four years ago when the car was found under a tarpaulin in a garden in Southampton where it has “rested” for some 3 years. After some light re-commissioning. the car was back on the circuit again.
It comes with a good history file with extensive bills and receipts from the early 1990`s. an original Service Manual. lots of old MOT Certificates and a current Certificate to July 2013. A fresh MOT will be issued upon sale if required.
Being an older restoration. the paint-work is not perfect and there are a few minor blemishes. However. it is suprisingly-good underneath with little evidence of any welding and mechanically the six cylinder engine is as sweet as a nut with plenty of instantaneous performance and a very smooth 4-speed column change gearbox. Inside is pretty much the same story with a nice patina to the original leather trim.
On the road. the car is a joy and drives just like a modern car! In no time at all. I was cruising the lanes of West Wiltshire at a steady 65 mph. I can easily see how and why many “Westies” are today in service as everyday transport. That said. they are a rare sight with less than 50 remaining on Britain's roads today.
Style. luxury and performance in a very British package. What fun!
