Model History

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a sports car marketed in both 2+2 coupe (1955–1974) and convertible (1957–1974) body styles by Volkswagen. The Karmann Ghia combined the chassis and mechanicals of the Type 1 (Beetle) with styling by Luigi Segre of the Italian carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built bodywork by the German coach-builder Karmann. The Karmann Ghia was internally designated the Type 14. Volkswagen later introduced a variant in 1961. the Type 34. featuring angular bodywork and based on the newly introduced Type 3 platform. Production doubled soon after its introduction. becoming the car most imported into the U. S. American industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague included the Type 14 in his list of the world's most beautifully designed products. More than 445. 00 Karmann Ghias were produced in Germany over the car's production life – not including the Type 34 variant. Karmann Brazil produced 41. 00 cars locally for South America between 1962 and 1975.

Interior & Equipment

The high back seat option was only available in 1968 and make for comfortable motoring. The interior is in very good condition throughout we have taken it upon ourselves to install a new set of black carpets as the ones in were the originals and were getting tired.

Exterior

The Burgundy paintwork is in very good condition all round. the panel fit is very good. The black hood is excellent and the black tonneau with burgundy piping is a nice touch.

Engine & Transmission

The 1500 engine runs very smoothly. the clutch and 4 speed manual gearbox operate with ease. The engine bay is detailed throughout and to a very high standard.

Summary

Originally imported from sunny USA by mark specialist Karman Ghia Centre in 2005. This karman was then converted by them to right hand drive so all done properly by the specialist. there is a 2. 5k invoice is in the history file for this work. The V5 states only three owners from 68 but this cannot be verified exactly. The past MOT's in the history file confirm only 5000 miles have been done in the last 8 years. Being a 1968 it has the US spec towel rail bumpers and the bullet indicators etc. The bodywork and paintwork are in excellent condition with no visible rust. bubbling or blistering.

There is a five page article on this car/Karmann's in "Classic and Sportscar " which is of course in the history file .
The scarcity of nice early cabriolets is sending prices rocketing. this one represents excellent value for money and not to be missed.
