1951 Nash Healey LeMans Roadster that you see before you is America's first production sports car.   Long before there was a Corvette. Thunderbird or a Kaiser-Darrin. Nash Healey was there first.   The retail price delivered was $4. 63. you could buy any two Chevrolets you wanted for that price!  Standard equipment included directional signals. chrome hubcaps. foam rubber seat cushion. five-ply white wall tires and overdrive and disappearing convertible top.

The Nash Healey had a 102” wheel base (two inches bigger then the 1953 Corvette).   It had an extremely wide track of 60 inches for its overall width.   Thanks to the aluminum body work the car was only 2. 90 pounds. which made it quick off the line with a high top speed and good highway cruiser.

With the 234 cubic inch Nash Ambassador inline six cylinder Nash Ambassador engine with two side draft carburetors. the car was extremely quick and had plenty of torque.   Besides that it handled like a real sports car.   Pull up glass side windows with a convertible top that went behind the front seat (something similar to the 1955 T-Bird).   It had a scoop on the hood that gave it very aerodynamic lines.

In 1951 Motor Trend magazine indicated that the Nash Healey rides better then the average sports car of the day without any apparent ill effects on the handling quality.   In 1951 the Nash Healey was entered into a LeMans race and proved itself by finishing fourth in class and sixth in the overall 24-hour race. well ahead of two Ferraris and an Aston Martin.

When it comes to the world of car collecting certain genres of cars become ‘in vogue' and it seems that everybody wants them.   In the 1980s the 1950s and 1960s cars were all the rage.   After the 80s the muscle cars took over and became the vogue collectible genre of the day.   Recently the more edgy limited production cars. unusual sports cars from the 50s and 60s have become the rage with sophisticated car collectors.   We are referring to Muntz. Kurtis. Dual Ghias and especially now Nash Healey.

When it comes to Nash Healey you had one basic separation. the early Nash Healey with the exclusive aluminum body strictly made as roadsters and the second generation of Nash Healeys that were designed by Pinin Farina but just don't seem to have quite the pizzazz of the 1951 Nash Healeys.   First of all the second generation starting in 1952 are made in steel and second of all there were a lot more produced and thirdly at MissChiTown LLC we prefer the slick. aerodynamic design of the first generation Nash Healey as the one that you see before you here.   You would expect a car like this to have side curtains but it has a compromise of glass side windows that pull up by hand (and do not crank up and down).    It has a top that folds down behind the front seat (which this car has) that must have given the Ford designers their idea for the soft top on 1955 Thunderbird.

The car that you see before you here is a one family car.   The deceased father purchased the car and kept it in his garage until approximately the year 2000.   It is our understanding that when he passed away the car sat for the last 13 years and has not been run since that time.   The aluminum body seems to be very straight with no noticeable hits or corrosion and the doors do not sag.   It appears that everything is original and 99% there.   We believe that the interior is original and is actually in very presentable condition.    It was believed that the car after sitting so long would start right up but for some reason the engine is stuck and would not turn over.   As you can see from the pictures that the spark plugs were removed and penetrating oil has been placed in the engine but so far no success in turning over the engine.   Therefore it is our guess that the engine will be need to be removed and overhauled.  As everything is original and there it is our understanding a complete overhaul on a Nash engine would be around $3. 00 - $4. 00. 00.   Some people tell us that is very high and can be done for less but we are just passing on the information as we hear it.  Who knows. maybe the penetrating oil will work?

The great thing about the car listed here is that it is the early version and a one family car and has the softtop. windows. emblems are there and the car looks to have never been abused.   It has the very neat directional signal lever on the dashboard and as you can see from the pictures the big Nash emblem that goes on the front grille.   It is there along with a special rear view Nash clock that has yet to be installed (but will go with the car).   The car looks to be a one repaint car and the current paint has very low luster.   We believe that the jack in the trunk is probably original to this car.   This car is going to make some collector very happy at the reasonable reserve that has been set.   The car is located in the Midwest and is ready for pickup.  Keep in mind that there is always the possibility that the penetrating oil will loosen up the engine and then the possibilities for having a good running engine as it exists are very high.

In terms of the restored value of these cars we would suggest that you check the latest auction at Worldwide Wide Auction Company and you will see that a restored version like this car that went for hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars!  Collectors are really getting into the early Nash aluminum bodied LeMans roadster and this is your opportunity to either drive this car with it all of its blemishes and patina or to fully restore it.   Either way. for fun or investment you have never seen an opportunity like this.
