1929 Stutz Le Mans Black Hawk 4. 9 litre SOHC Supercharged Straight 8 cylinder.

Chassis number: 16729
Registration number: SV8089

A fantastic historic race car eligible for numerous classic racing events.
Since the year 2000 the car has been entered and run at the following circuits:

Silverstone. Donnington. Oulton Park. The Le Mans Classic. Montelhery. Dijon. Spa. Nurbugring. Porto and in the U. S. A. Laguna Seca. Elkart Lake and Lime Rock.

The car was also a regular and very successful participant in Duncan Wiltshire's Sporting Legend series which ran up until 2011.

The car has L6 Stutz chassis number 16729 made in 1929 together with the original front and rear axle suspension steering and brake assemblies.

The rear axle has been modified removing the original worm drive and replacing it with a standard pre war crown wheel and pinion allowing various ratios and fitted with quaiffe half shafts.

The original Stutz hydraulic brakes are retained but with twin master cylinders and a balance bar and the brake drums are of Baynton Jones manufacture from a solid steel billet fitted with an aluminium back plate for heat dissipation. The hubs are all rudge and the wheels to suit the 19” Dunlop racing tyres are of modern lightweight construction.

The engine number 90556 is of 1928 casting now fitted with a Baynton Jones designed and manufactured solid billet counter weighted crankshaft fitted with all new steel bearing supports and white metal bearings. the camshaft in the head is modified to suit the supercharger. the valves are of stainless steel this engine still incorporates the original Stutz valve caps and lubrication system.

It is a twin plug head fired by the original Delco distributor. The electrical installation is 12 volt supplied by a heavy duty CAV drive through dynamo which in turn drives the original oil pump distributor and water pump. The cooling system is sealed but not pressurised and has catchment tanks.

The car is currently fitted with a four speed Moss type close ratio gear box the supercharger is a Rootes type driven from the crank shaft three rubber belts the supercharger is fitted with twin S. U. carburettors. The bodywork for this car is of Weymann construction fabric covered. the car as required in 1929 Le Mans regulations has a fully fitted hood designed for racing speeds. the windscreen is fully fold flat and the car is fitted with aero screens.

The car is well patinated and has many event stickers attached to the bodywork.
You have to drive this car to appreciate how quick it is & how well it goes. Stutz led the field at the 1919 Le Mans until a few laps before the end when a failed third gear allowed the Bentleys to come past wiping beads of sweaty relief from their brows. Today this car makes 4 1/2 litere Bentleys look fairly tame by comparison.

The car will be displayed on our stand at Technoclassica in Essen.
