You can't really call yourself a car guy or gal until you've owned a 2002.
These Bavarian bargains are one of the last true vintage sport car values left.
Porsche 911 and 356 prices have skyrocketed.
Even good Alfas are hard to find under $30 k.
What makes 2002 s so desirable is that they are affordable to own. a blast to drive. and very reliable…the perfect vintage touring/rallying car.
This BMW is unique in the fact that it has a nearly complete maintenance history.
Not only does it have an inch thick of receipts but a nice journal with a great time-line of the vehicle's repairs.
After pouring through the records. it is clear that its owners loved this 2002.
The 2 nd owner purchased the car in September of 2000.
The car had been in storage for 6 years.
He immediately started going through everything on the car.
This included a complete engine rebuild (around 37 k miles ago).
Next was the interior.
New carpet was installed as well as a nice pair of E 21 Recaro sport seats.
About 18. 00 miles ago. the car got a fresh coat of paint.
Panasports were then added to give it the right attitude.
An Ireland Engineering 22 mm hollow front sway bar was installed as well as a 3:64 limited slip differential.
Recently. the entire trunk areas was redone and treated for rust (see pictures).
Also. new Bilsteins were installed.
A brand new front subframe was installed.
The battery was relocated to the trunk.
Full service performed including new front wheel bearings. spark plugs. adjust valves. and tune.
New Panasport wheels and tires all the way around were installed.
The final touch was having Jeff Tighe of T&P Motorsports (one of the top early BMW restoration shops in So Cal) convert the big bumpers to early-style bumpers.
Jeff also rebuilt the heater box and installed a Bluetooth radio system.
All in all. another $10. 00 was just invested.
This 2002 is ready to be enjoyed and driven anywhere.
The body is in great condition and the paint is shiny.
This is a great little driver that would be respectable at any local car show/cruise night.
Looking through the records. there was a receipt for some front body repair about 22 years ago.
Looks like they replaced the front headlight clip and a fender.
Other than that. the body appears to be in very good condition with no signs of rust or damage.
The interior is equally as tidy.
All the gauges/lights work properly.
The heater core was replaced and works great.
The dash is in great condition with no cracks or warping.
There rest of the upholstery looks great and the headliner is in excellent condition as well.
This BMW is a great driving car.
It feels very tight and responsive.
We had one of our local BMW enthusiasts who is very familiar with these cars take it on a test drive.
He had very positive comments on the car.
He said it was very solid and drove smooth.
He said it was apparent that this car has been properly maintained.
Don't get caught buying someone else's unfinished project.
You are always better off buying a “done” car.
This car is turn key and ready to be driven anywhere.
California registration is paid through March of 2014.
This BMW includes a large stack of records including a very detailed log book of most of the repairs.
Also. an extra set of keys. spare tire. and jack are included.
