The output of this model began in 1972 with the aim to make a reliable car racing for participation in the competition in group 4. For racing versions it was possible adjustments to 522 kW and the use of turbocharger for participation in the competition in group 5. Racing suspension of the M1 was dvuhrychazhnoy with transverse links and although the clutch and brake pedals were tight, the feeling of control and reaction machines were typical for BMW and very good. The model had a high driving performance.
