The Original Volkswagen Scirocco Storm Mk2

I've loved and owned this car for 14 years. slowly restoring its original Storm looks. During this time I've enjoyed driving it on a strictly limited mileage classic car policy. so it's still only done 140kmiles.

But here's what sets it apart from just any Scirocco. or any Scirocco Storm.

 A Special History

This was the original Scirocco Storm press vehicle along with reg A927 PNV (no longer thought to be on the road unless it has a different number plate). It appeared in the following publications:

Autocar 11th August 1984 (http://website. lineone. net/~dr. dub/autocar_storm. htm)

What Car? October 1984 (http://retrorides. proboards. co/thread/49940)

The excellent “VW Power and Style” book by Ian Kuah (on page 117).

As you can see from the first 4 very recent pictures. it still looks great and turns heads. Here's the technical data for it. with some cool enhancements ……. the best of which is the standard but gutsy 1. 8 16v KR engine! This is from a Corrado / Golf - it always urges you to "drive". to rev and enjoy. Evenso. I never do until the oil temp is at least 50degC as indicated on the trip computer. but thereafter it beats most other Scirocco Mk2 (if you can ever find one!).

After 30 years on the road. the Scirocco has proved to be an enduring car. built to last. It's given me tremendous enjoyment. Driven weekly if not daily over the past few years. it remains a practical regular use car. occasionally taken on a long journey to find scenic. twisting routes to enjoy its sporting prowess. turning heads regularly and occasionally being followed and engaged by admiring enthusiasts – indicating how exclusive it has become.

Although this original Storm has been the subject of some modifications. it has remained true to being a Scirocco Storm with the added punch of its stable mate's 16v engine.

But it's always work-in-progress and a busy life means I can't give the time to further restore her. And she deserves more time than I can give to fully restore her to her prime.

Although 600 Mark 1 and a similar number of Mark 2 Storms were produced. only 30 or so are registered on the road in UK. That's incredibly exclusive! (source: http://www. howmanyleft. co. uk/vehicle/volkswagen_scirocco_storm)

Let's cover all the assurances of what is good with the car:

Engine – great – starts. runs and revs beautifully. Timing belt changed less than 10000miles ago. Transmission – all good – solid gear changes with virtually no play as I've recently installed a full gear linkages repair kit. No noise from drive shafts or CV joints. New clutch installed less than 4000 miles ago. Body – really good condition – especially for year. Couple of small rust spots detailed in next section. Doors hang well. there's no “drop” which I've seen on some Sciroccos. All glass – original glass all round which is etched with the number plate A745 XVV.

So what is specific work in progress and could be done to improve the car?

Things that need to be done.

Water leak

You'll know that Sciroccos are prone in their later years to water leaks that lead to the passenger foot well filling up. Unfortunately my car has suffered that but the cause has been difficult to determine. I've narrowed it down to the tailgate where the lock seal is cracked and there may be leakage from the windscreen rubber. Due to the shape of the body the water does run down beneath the rear bench and into the passenger side foot wells (back and front). I tried to address this problem but ended up removing but not being able to put back the headlining by the hatch which now looks untidy and needs experienced hands to fix. I keep the car garaged and so the interior is completely dry and remains so but I'm being honest about this matter.

Driver's seat and rear bench.

The bolster on the driver's seat is pretty worn and torn. The rest of the seats are OK. although the rear bench doesn't fold anymore (the hinge has rusted during the time there was some damp before I kept the car garaged). There are some for sale. particularly this immaculate set http://www. carandclassic. co. uk/car/C411849 which the seller wouldn't accept my offer on. However you may want to consider making a better offer. There's also this set on ebay: http://www. ebay. co. uk/itm/200991993978?_trksid=p2055119. m1438. l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

What it would be nice to do.

Body

There was a scratch on the bonnet and n/s wing when I bought the car which needed some cosmetic work to remove which involved a respray of the bonnet. tops of wings and blended at the tops of the doors. The rest of the car has original paint which has bleached over the years so looks a little faded. There are 2 rust spots – one. by the glass on the passenger door. has been on the car since I've owned it and only got slightly worse. The little ding on the back was done by. I suspect. the tow bar of a SUV in Morrison's car park – but person didn't own up to it. Repairing these 2 spots by themselves is uneconomical (circa £200) as the car deserves one complete respray during which these small jobs and other superficial scratches and surface imperfections can be dealt with.

Radio

If only I could get my hands on one at a sensible price. an original Blaupunkt Melbourne would look nice. but let's not underestimate the benefits of modern radios with their memory cards and other digital capabilities (like RDS). It currently has a nice Ford RDS 6000. The original speakers rear speakers are still in place but 2 Pioneer speakers fitted to the parcel shelf deliver a much better sound. Ideally a parcel shelf without speakers and better original style speakers would be better.

Top and Bottom Strut Braces

I'm sure it would add to the driving enjoyment these strut braces were fitted. Ideally VW's lower strut brace as was fitted to the 16v. or the Autotech after market top and bottom braces.

New Decals

The car has the original badges including “Storm” in the front grill and “Storm 16v” at the back. but the “Volkswagen” and “Scirocco” stickers have begun to peel away (ironically due to regular cleaning!). Dr Dub's excellent website gives details and templates to have new ones made. (http://website. lineone. net/~dr. dub/Rear%20Decals. htm)

Rear view mirror could be tighter

Well I have one in excellent condition (included in sale). but haven't succeeded in replacing existing mirror. The job requires great care to ensure the screen is not damaged. I gave in to the risk when I couldn't get the existing mirror's base off safely.

What's included in the sale apart from the complete car

All documentation. of course (receipts. MOT records. previous tax discs. service schedule etc)

A very good condition “VW Power and Style” book by Ian Kuah which has a photo of this Scirocco.

I have a load of spares for the car which I'll be happy to give to the new owner. This includes but is not limited to:

Spare rear light clustersWhite front indicator lenses (very rare and valuable)Essential fuel pump relays (and other relays)Starter motorSpare radiator and fanGrillVirtually new fuel filler pipe (not that it needs it). Spare ECU for 1. 8 16v KR engine

Conclusion

So there you have it. I've finally done it and provided all the details I can think of for this sale. It is no doubt a unique opportunity and if circumstances were different for me I wouldn't be selling the car. But I'm willing to make a clean break so another Scirocco enthusiast can take this car. continue to improve it and make it their own.

No doubt you'll have lots of questions so feel free to ask. I also expect you to visit to look at and drive the car before you buy. For those Ed Chinas (Wheeler Dealers) amongst you will no doubt love to add finishing touches to this unique car.

If you want more details then I can send lots of details by email (other photos. article on the stainless steel exhaust with pictures of it being made and fitted. MOT and mileage records. log of receipts. etc). Email is mo@ingeniousfutures. com

Thanks for looking.

BTW: I'm also advertising this elsewhere so reserve the choice to end auction.

Hello, is the Scirocco Storm still available ? Your ad says it has work pending. Can you let me know what please as they are well known for rusting badly in the chassis. I have owned two Storms back in the 90's so know them well...
