VOLKSWAGEN "THE THING" MODEL 181 WAS BUILT IN Germany by VOLKSWAGEN year 1972

This car was used by the German Army as an Ambulance car and therefore used only in Emergency cases. I bought this car from the German Army and shipped it over to the US and started to get new paint. shocks. brakes. tires. It has a convertible soft top. which is new and it has also a roll over bar. In 2010 I put in a heavy duty BOSCH starter ( $ 480. 00) In 2013 a brake job for $ 700. was done. Bills are available. It is powered by a 4-cylinder gas engine. with 4-speed manual transmission and on the rear axle it has a retracking device for terrain driving.

I used this car only to pull it behind my motor home and while vacationing I used it for fun. The speedometer shows actual mileage 78320 km. approx. 30000 km were used to pull it behind my motor home. The car is in excellent condition and works properly. even the heater.

Standard military equipment included a military lighting system. map light. rifle mounts. spade. starting handle. towing hook. straps on the inside rear deck for attaching a shovel. clip and latch for engine hand crank inside engine compartment (engine crank handle)

If you are in the market for a unique and hard to find. rust free. extremely reliable vehicle. look no further. This THING starts on command and remains a pleasure to drive/shift on the open road or terrain. It was always garaged.

The reason for selling this vehicle is that I am 83 year old and sold my motorhome and I have no use for it anymore.
