1987 USMC HMMWV / Humvee / Hummer M998

Sale price: $25,000.00 make an offer

Seller's notes: "This is an authentic USMC HMMWV thus it will have typical wear, but no known damage. I maintained this beast myself for the past 12 years and changed all fluids (except transmission) every 1,500 miles. The tranny was done every 5,000 miles. You will find typical scratches here and there as one would expect for a military vehicle. This is the real deal and not a clone or HMMWV wanna-be. I have maintained this precisely as a 1987 model (which it is) with some of the A2 upgrades (e.g. front seat 3 point seat belts)."

This is an authentic 1987 United States Marine Corps M998 HMMWV (High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle); commonly known as a Humvee or Hummer.   This was purchased from the Marine Corps. It is a real military hummer. It has kevlar doors and laminated windows with an aluminum body that'll never rust.  It can drive under water up to the roof – as long as you can keep your nose above water to breathe you are good to go. It is fully waterproof and is designed to sink in a river to drive across the bottom. The engine is a 6. 2 liter GM engine  (same as the mid 80's Suburban) so many of the engine parts can be purchased locally. All parts for this HMMWV can be purchased within the US. I have maintained this HMMWV myself since I bought it in 2001. It is diesel so no smog required.

The vehicle has the military warn 9. 00 lb winch. radios. antenna. spare tire carrier. and pioneer tool kit fully stocked. I did install an air horn from a 5 ton military truck under the wheel well with air compressor under rear seat (auto fill to maintain pressure). For those who know. the original HMMWV horn is literally a very small beep-beep horn that in my opinion was not loud enough in traffic.   The 5 ton truck horn does the trick.

Why am I selling? Due to my age. I found out last weekend that I couldn't lift the tire and wheel anymore. Since I do all my own maintenance. this simply doesn't work. It was great when I was in my forties. but not anymore.

I have enjoyed this beast for many years but it's time for this old man to let it go to someone who can continue to work it.

I prefer to sell outright but would be willing to consider a trade for a car that I can more easily maintain.   The car should be of similar value. such as a pre-1969 Corvette. or car+cash on par value with this HMMWV.   Hot rods are cool.

I will only sell to someone within the United States.

An important consideration when purchasing a HMMWV is to note where it spent most of its life. Most of the HMMWV's on the market today came out of one of two auctions held by the Marine Corps back around the year 2000. Approximately half were sold out of Atlanta Georgia and the other approximate half were sold a few months later out of Riverside California.   The Riverside California HMMWV's tended to do their duty on the beaches/hills of Southern California with close contact to a salt water environment (read - rust).   You can see that type of rust on perhaps other HMMWV's for sale. My HMMWV. the one for this auction. came out of Atlanta Georgia. A normal. non-salty environment.   My HMMWW is NOT rusted along the frame and various frame members.   Earlier I noted that the HMMWV has an aluminum body and will not rust - that is true; but note that the frame of course is steel - and in a salty environment. that will rust quite a bit.   So please be careful when considering a HMMWV and look for its point of origin and what environment it spent most of its life. As always. the best place to judge the quality of a vehicle is from the underside.   Best of luck to all.

FYI that I also have this vehicle for sale locally so if I get a local offer that'll be the end of the ebay auction.   Cheers.
