1973 Volkswagen Thing (Kubelwagen) for sale
Current customer rating: (390 votes ) based onHere we have a very solid. great running and driving VW Thing for sale!
This is a 1973 model and according to the owner's manual (yes. it has an owner's manual!) it was originally from Arizona. Based upon the overall condition of the car. it is quite likely that is indeed where it began and spent a majority of its life.
As mentioned in the Vehicle Condition section. it has an amateur paint job in what appears to be its original shade of orange. While there is minimal rust. the perforation is limited to the front of the rear wheel wells. behind the rear wheel wells and the battery tray floorboard (a replacement panel has been installed for the battery tray). There are other areas of surface rust. but no other areas where the rust has eaten through any metal; this Thing is very solid!
The black vinyl interior is in very good condition. The front seats have been reupholstered in what looks to be Beetle material (not smooth vinyl like the rear seats); front and back have no tears or burns. Rear seats are missing back support brackets and therefore "recline". Dash is in good condition. with fabricated glove box instead of open area (can be removed if desired).
Windshield wipers and turn signals do not work; all other lights are working (one headlight burned out). Top needs replacing (new ones can be had for a mere $300 and are super easy to replace); side curtains are in excellent condition! Original gas heater is missing. but all wiring appears to be present. Spare tire is also present. as is the original jack.
The 1600 dual port carbureted upright motor runs great! It fires right up with a functioning electric choke. idles smooth and accelerates well. It has new points. cap. rotor. plugs and oil. The car shifts through all 4 gears and reverse with no grinding and no popping out of gear. The car stops well with good brakes and new brake lines (and all new fluid). Has Empi mufflers too. Tires are a matched set of radial and are in like new condition and do not leak.
A four point roll cage was installed sometime in its life. and adds a measure of safety and aesthetics. The front seats have the original seat belts with the back seat void of any.
This Thing is definitely one that you can be proud to drive around as is or is a prime candidate for restoration. as it is so solid and mechanically sound.

Comments and questions to the seller:
from Ian McLeish, dated 04 june 2014Hi, is this still for sale? Would you be able to obtain a new roof? I had one of these in Belize in 1977. Fantastic cars. Price for shipment to UK?
Kind regards, Ian
