1966 Morris Minor 1000
In December 1960 the Morris Minor became the first British car to sell more than 1,000,000 units. To commemorate the achievement, a limited edition of 350 two-door Minor saloons, (one for each UK Morris dealership), was produced with distinctive lilac paintwork and a white leather interior with black piping. The badge name on the side of the bonnet was modified to read "Minor 1000000" instead of the standard "Minor 1000". The millionth Minor was donated to the National Union of Journalists, which planned to use it as a prize in a competition in aid of the union's Widow and Orphan Fund. The company, at the same time, presented a celebratory Minor to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, but this car was constructed of cake.
Decidedly British we have some royalty in our midst in a 1966 Morris Minor 1000. Originally named due to its 948cc, (rounded up by the marketeers), this car goes way over the top of that by a long shot. A souped up "Morrie" saloon if you will, now with 350 cubes courtesy Jasper, TH350 Trans, a 9 inch 4:56-1 Detroit locker Strange Axle, and a caged modified interior, line up to the beam and HOLD ON!
Exterior
At first glance this exterior retains much of its original charm. Small rounded bulbous hood, protruding fenders and a single headlight and a simple horizontal grille. The bumper has been replaced by vertical push bars, nicely chromed. Original glass configuration is still there as is the rounded over roof, curved rear glass, and VW like rear end. More pushers back here and some wheelie bars to keep the car from literally flipping itself over during high times of great acceleration. All bathed in black which is nice and deep, and in contrast sporting 15inch rocket front wheels and 15 inch chromed steel wheels on the back 295/50R15 fatties. Here comes the hanky drop for the gal in the poodle skirt.
Interior
A swing of the small doors reveals a completely transformed interior meant for some serious straight line competition. A steel tube roll cage envelops the entire interior which now consists of black bolstered and purple insert racing high back RCI buckets. In the middle is a Hurst quarter stick shifter and save for the centrally mounted round gauge cluster in a single circle, and the now purple glovebox the interior has been transformed. Just below the central circle now resides a series of toggles, lights, fuses, and a trio of monitoring gauges line up on the bottom of the center. In the driver's center is an aluminum panel just behind the edge of the wheel that has 2 gauges, one a light indicator shifter tach from Autometer and the other a digital and analog readout speedo. A long stalked steering column rises through the aluminum panel and a small rally steering wheel on top. Nice black carpeting covers the floors and an incredibly white headliner is above the upper roll cage. Even a cell phone holder is in back of the steering wheel. Buckle up buttercup.
Drivetrain
Stuffed under the hood is a massive for this bay 350ci crate V8. It is topped with a Weiand intake, and a 4-barrel Edelbrock carb. A TH350 3-speed automatic trans is in and A Ford 9-inch 4.56 Detroit Locker rear axle spins the rear tires. The engine presents nicely with plenty of polished surfaces throughout its menagerie of power add ons. And a shout to the trunk where a fuel cell resides along with a stainless battery box. Light 'em up...
Undercarriage
All like new with tubbed rear fenders, straight steel framing, and immaculate floor pans. Plenty of braided stainless snakes its way through the framing, and for the suspension the front uses a 4 bar with coil over setup and for the rear a 4 link with coil overs. Disc braking is up front and drums for the rear fatties. Headers feed cherry bomb style exhaust for a melodious motorhead tone to gray your ear.
Drive-Ability
My partner in automotive specifying crime got into this one and must have had a good time as his pants were soiled when he got out. He reported all working and plenty of raw power, and the Hurst 1/4 shifter was very kewl! Cleanup on aisle 1!
At first glance it looks much like the Moggie of yore however some major spice has been added under the bonnet, and the interior has now gone from street to strip. Chip Chip Cheerio me Droogs!
