The Great “American Sports Custom” Find of 2014

The returning G. I. 's who prior to World War II had been into customizing cars returned with a new concept for modifying their cars.

The new concept was gotten from the fact that the returning G. I. 's had for the first time seen a multitude of two-seater sports cars through out Europe.

In the United States before World War II the Detroit manufacturers were not making anything that could be considered a sports car and now the returning G. I. 's were modifying and customizing their project cars into two-seater sports cars.

The term for this classification of cars would later be known as “SPORT CUSTOMS”.

There are many examples of these “Sport Custom” cars that have gone through auction at sky rocketing prices.

Every once in a while a very significant sports custom is uncovered and sets the car collecting community on its ear.

Miss Chi Town. a marketing arm for car collectors that want to sell their cars on Ebay is proud to be chosen to help the private collector market the sports custom in this ad which had been occasionally been known as the “Glass Wonder Special”.

In the early 1950 s fiberglass became the medium of the day for customizers and for Detroit example the 1953 Corvette.

The car that you see before you was fabricated in fiberglass around 1954 on a 1933 Ford chassis with a correct period hotrodded Ford V-8 flathead engine.

It has the Harrell heads and the Evans two pot manifold with 97 Stromberg carbs. Winfield semi grind cam. Dome pistons.

(Now we at Miss Chi Town call that the whole enchilada).

The clear title is listed as a 1933 Ford.

A few updated modifications to make this car highly drivable include alternator to replace generator. electric distributor and some modifications to the clutch.

During the period from 1950 to 1955 there were many sports customs. mostly originating in California made out of fiberglass.

A good percentage of those cars were to put it mildly were not architecturally pleasing.

The car that you see before you with the wraparound windshield. high tailfins. low cut beltline make it more then pleasing.

We love the color scheme. the wraparound windshield. beautiful frontend treatment and the fact that this car represents everything that a Sports Custom should represent.

Some collectors are familiar with the Sports Custom that was made during the same time period called the “Bob Hope Special” that sold at an RM auction a few years ago for well over $125. 00. 00.

This Sports Custom is exceedingly much more then reasonably priced in view of that sale and this car should go to a museum or a collector of rare American cars.

While we all hope that the American Sports Custom cars tend to remain in the United States we are well aware of the fact that American post war sports customs are very popular in places like Australia. New Zealand and Sweden along with many other American car loving countries.

This car has always been very well maintained although it's original history is unknown it very period correct.

We suggest that seriously interested collectors study the beautiful grille work. well-proportioned high fins (well in advance of what Chrysler would be producing in 1957 with Virgil Enxer's high fin design.

This is a rare opportunity to have a piece of American automotive ingenuity and design.

Currently there are only about twenty well-known and highly respected post-war American “Sport Custom” cars that exist and this car known as the “Glass Wonder Special” is one of them.

You can bid with confidence on this car and you will enjoy the attention this car gets at every car show.
