MY 1973 MERCURY MONTEGO GT WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW ON DECEMBER 29TH. 1973 FROM THE SHERIDAN LINCOLN MERCURY DEALER ON LAKESHORE ROAD AND DIXE ROAD. IN MISSISSAUGA. ONTARIO.  IT RUNS WELL AND DRIVES WELL. RESTORED AS SEEN BETWEEN THE FALL OF 2011 AND THE FALL OF 2012. AFTER 32 YEARS OF SITTING AROUND WITHOUT USE.   A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE CAR IN CANADA.  

THIS LISTING TOOK DAYS TO PREPARE. BUT IS FINALLY COMPLETE.

SERIAL # 3H16H636516 (TAKEN FROM THE DASH-MOUNTED SERIAL PLATE AND CONFIRMED ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR-MOUNTED VEHICLE CERTIFICATION DECAL).   THE ONTARIO OWNERSHIP DOCUMENT. IN MY NAME. WAS INSPECTED AND WAS CONFIRMED TO HAVE THE MATCHING SERIAL NUMBER.   THE VEHICLE IS NOT BRANDED.

'636516' - SEQUENTIAL SERIAL NUMBER.   TAKEN FROM THE VEHICLE CERTIFICATION DECAL ARE THE FOLLOWING NUMBERS AND CODES; BODY - '63R' (FASTBACK MONTEGO GT). COLOUR - '6E' (MEDIUM BRIGHT YELLOW). TRIM - 'FF' (MEDIUM GINGER VINYL). TRANSMISSION - 'W' (C4 AUTOMATIC). AXLE - '2' (2. 75:1 RATIO NON-LOCKING). DSO (DISTRICT SALES OFFICE) - 'A1' (ORIGINALLY SOLD IN THE CENTRAL CANADA SALES DISTRICT WHICH INCLUDES ONTARIO).   BUILD DATE OF THE CAR WAS JUNE 18. 1973.

THE CAR IS IN GENERALLY 'VERY GOOD' TO 'EXCELLENT' OVERALL CONDITION.   THE PAINT IS A NEW BASE COAT / CLEAR COAT RESPRAY THAT IS IN GENERALLY EXCELLENT CONDITION.   THE BODY DOES SHOW SOME EVIDENCE OF REPAIRS BUT IS NOW IN VERY GOOD DAMAGE-FREE CONDITION.   THIS IS OF NOTE CONSIDERING THE CAR HAS SPENT ITS ENTIRE LIFE IN ONTARIO.   THE INTERIOR IS IN VERY GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION.   I INDICATED THAT THE ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN ARE ALL ORIGINAL AND THEY ARE IN WELL MAINTAINED AND VERY GOOD RUNNING CONDITION.

BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT FRONT FENDERS ARE IN GENERALLY EXCELLENT CONDITION.   THERE ARE NO DENTS OR DINGS VISIBLE ON EITHER FENDER.   NO BODY FILLER WAS DETECTED.   THE PAINT HAS AN EXCELLENT GLOSS WITH NO CHIPS OR SCRATCHES SEEN.   THE WHEEL LIP MOULDINGS ARE NEW AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.   THE ORIGINAL SIDE MOULDINGS ARE ALSO IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AS ARE THE SIDE MARKER LIGHTS.   THE CHROME 'MONTEGO GT' EMBLEMS ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   THE WHEEL WELLS ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.

 

BOTH DOORS ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   THE NEW PAINT IS IN EXCELLENT DAMAGE FREE CONDITION. CONSISTENT WITH THE REST OF THE CAR.   NO DINGS OR DENTS WERE SEEN ON EITHER SIDE.   SOME BODY FILLER WAS DETECTED AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH DOOR.   THE PAINTED DOOR MIRRORS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AS ARE THE CENTRE MOULDING STRIPS.   THE CHROME DOOR HANDLES SHOW SOME PITS.   THE DOOR AND WINDOW WEATHER-STRIPPING IS NEW AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.   NO HINGE WEAR WAS DETECTED ON EITHER DOOR.

 

 

THE 'FORD' DOOR SILL TRIM PLATES ARE IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION THOUGH SOME DINGS WERE NOTED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE.   THE 'A' AND 'B' PILLARS WERE REPAINED ON THE REST OF THE CAR AND THEY ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.   THE ROCKER PANELS BELOW THE DOORS ARE IN VERY GOOD RUST FREE CONDITION WITH NO DAMAGE NOTED AND NO BODY FILLER DETECTED.

 

 

BOTH QUARTER PANELS ARE IN GENERALLY VERY GOOD CONDITION.   BODY FILLER WAS DETECTED IN FRONT OF. ABOVE AND BEHIND BOTH WHEEL WELLS.    SOME MINOR BLISTERING HAS DEVELOPED ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL LIP BUT THE MAN WHO RUNS THE BODY SHOP WHERE THIS MAGNIFICENT WORK WAS DONE HAS ALREADY AGREED TO FIX ALL DEFECTS FREE OF CHARGE.   I SIMPLY HAVE NOT TAKEN HIM UP ON IT AS OF YET BECAUSE I PLANNED ON DOING IT IN THE SPRING.    SHOULD THE CAR SELL HERE. I CAN DIRECT THE HAPPY NEW OWNER TO HIM. AHEAD OF TIME. TO ARRANGE FOR THIS. AS THE WORK IS GUARANTEED. AND HE IS AN OLD-SCHOOL PERFECTIONIST WHO IS AS GOOD AS HIS WORD.   HIS HANDIWORK SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.   I HAD $15. 00. 00 WORTH OF WORK DONE THERE OVER THE COURSE OF ONE YEAR AT THE PRICE OF $10. 00. 00. A BARGAIN CONSIDERING THE EXTENT TO WHICH HE WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND EXPECTATIONS ON EVERY SQUARE INCH OF THE CAR. EVEN REPAINTING THE INNER DOORS. AND COMPLETELY RECONDITIONING THE REAR WHEEL WELLS. AS WELL AS SANDING THE WHOLE CAR DOWN TO THE BARE METAL.   THE PANELS ARE STRAIGHT WITH NO DINGS OR DENTS SEEN.   THE PAINT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO CHIPS OR SCRATCHES NOTED.   THE SIDE MOULDING STRIPS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE WHEEL LIP MOULDINGS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION BUT FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR PIECE. WHICH WAS DAMAGED AS I DROVE INTO THE GARAGE ONE DAY.   IT IS FIXABLE. WITH A GOOD METAL-BEATER. LIKE THE DENT DOCTOR. OTHERWISE A NEW PIECE WILL HAVE TO BE SOURCED FROM SPECIAL INTEREST CARS IN OAKVILLE.   THE SIDE MARKER LENSES ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   BOTH WHEEL WELLS ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.

 

 

THE REAR OF THE CAR IS IN GENERALLY VERY GOOD CONDITION.   THE LOWER VALANCE ASSEMBLY IS IN EXCELLENT DAMAGE FREE CONDITION WITH NO BODY FILLER DETECTED.   THE TAIL LIGHT LENSES ARE IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION.   THE CHROME BUMPER IS IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION BUT DOES SHOW A DING IN ITS CENTRE.

 

 

THE TRUNK LID IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND DOES NOT SHOW ANY DENTS OR DINGS.   NO BODY FILLER WAS DETECTED.   THE PAINT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. CONSISTENT WITH THE REST OF THE CAR.   THE 'MONTEGO' EMBLEM IS IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION BUT DOES SHOW SOME MINOR OXIDATION.   THE TRUNK SEAL IS NEW AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.   THE UNDERSIDE OF THE LID HAS BEEN REPAINTED AND IS ALSO IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

THE TRUNK COMPARTMENT IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   THE TRUNK FLOOR IS SOLID WITH NO RUST DAMAGE SEEN.   NO SPARE TIRE IS FITTED BUT I DO HAVE A SPARE SET OF ORIGINAL STANDARD STEEL WHEELS AND HUBCAPS FOR THE CAR. WITH RUBBER MOUNTED TO THEM.   THE JACK BASE IS PRESENT BUT NOT THE BALANCE OF THE JACK.   THE REPRODUCTION TRUNK MATTING IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

 

 

 

 

 

THE FRONT OF THE CAR IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   THE HEADLIGHT SURROUNDS AND TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS ARE IN VERY GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION.   STANDARD HEADLIGHTS ARE FITTED.   THE GRILLE ASSEMBLY. INCLUDING ITS ORIGINAL 'GT' EMBLEM. IS ALSO IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION.   THERE ARE THREE SMALL CHIPS IN THE NOSE PANEL PAINT AT THE EDGE OF THE GRILLE.   THE 'MERCURY' SCRIPT EMBLEM IS IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION.   THE CHROME FRONT BUMPER AND OVERRIDERS ARE IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION SHOWING ONLY ONE DING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ASSEMBLY.

 

 

THE HOOD IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO DINGS. DENTS OR CHIPS NOTED.   NO BODY FILLER WAS DETECTED.   THE SIMULATED HOOD SCOOPS AND THEIR BLOCK OFF TRIM PLATES ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HOOD IS IN GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION.

 

 

THE ROOF PANEL IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH NO DINGS OR DENTS NOTED AND NO BODY FILLER DETECTED.   THE PAINT IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH NO CHIPS OR SCRATCHES SEEN.   SOME FAINT 'TIGER STRIPING' BLEMISHES CAN BE SEEN ON CLOSE INSPECTION.   THE DRIP RAIL MOLDING IS IN VERY GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION OUTSIDE OF SOME LIGHT SCRATCHING IN SPOTS.

 

ALL THE GLASS IN THE CAR IS IN VERY GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION.   THE WINDSHIELD IS A CORRECT CARLITE BRAND LAMINATED SAFETY GLASS UNIT IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   THE DOOR WINDOWS. QUARTER WINDOWS AND REAR GLASS ARE ALSO CORRECT ORIGINAL CARLITE BRAND TEMPERED GLASS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   THE WINDSHIELD AND REAR WINDOW TRIM IS IN IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   I ADD TO THE APPRAISAL HERE BY STATING THAT THIS ORIGINAL GLASS IS EVERYWHERE TINTED SLIGHTLY FROM THE FACTORY.

THE CAR IS FITTED WITH FOUR P245/60R15 B. F. GOODRICH T/A RADIAL TIRES THAT DATE FROM 2012 AND REMAIN IN EXCELLENT 'NEW' CONDITION.   THEY ARE MOUNTED TO A NEW SET OF REPRODUCTION MAGNUM 500 CHROME STEEL RIMS THAT ARE ALSO IN EXCELLENT CONDITION INCLUDING THEIR NEW MERCURY CENTRE CAPS.   THE FRONT WHEELS ARE MOUNTED WITH THE FACTORY DUST CAPS HAVING BEEN REMOVED.   THIS IS NECESSARY TO FIT THE MERCURY CAPS. AND SHOULD NOT CAUSE ANY PROBLEMS.   I HAVE THE ORIGINAL DUST CAPS STORED AWAY IN THE CONSOLE.   THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN LESS THAN 3000 MILES SINCE IT WAS PUT BACK ON THE ROAD IN OCTOBER OF 2012. AND HAS NEVER SINCE BEEN WINTER DRIVEN.   RUST CHECK WAS PROMPTLY DONE AT THAT TIME.

THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE CAR IS IN GENERALLY VERY GOOD ORIGINAL UN-DETAILED CONDITION.   THE VISIBLE SECTIONS OF THE FLOORBOARDS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION WITH NO EVIDENCE OF PATCHWORK SEEN.   SOME MINOR SURFACE RUST HAS DEVELOPED AT THE FRONT OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOORBOARD.   THE VISIBLE SECTIONS OF THE CAR'S FULL PERIMETER FRAME ASSEMBLY ARE ALSO IN GOOD ORIGINAL DAMAGE FREE CONDITION.   THE UPGRADED DUAL EXHAUST SYSTEM IS NEW AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.   THE ORIGINAL STYLE FACTORY FRONT DISC AND REAR DRUM BRAKE SYSTEM IS RETAINED.

 

THE CAR IS FITTED WITH ITS ORIGINAL H-CODE 351 CID V8 ENGINE THAT WAS FACTORY RATED (ON PAPER. TO GET THE LOWEST POSSIBLE HORSEPOWER RATING AT THE LOWEST POSSIBLE RPM ALLOWABLE. SO THIS IS AN ARTIFICALLY FALSE LOW READING - THE REAL HORSEPOWER SHOULD BE RATED BETWEEN 3500 AND 4000 RPM. AT THOSE LEVELS IT IS CLOSER TO THE 200 H. P. RANGE. I HAVE HEARD BETWEEN 190 AND 220 DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE AIR CONDITIONER IS ENGAGED OR NOT) AT 159-163 H. P. IN 1973.   THIS WAS DONE BECAUSE OF THE NEW EMISSIONS STANDARDS THAT WENT INTO PLACE IN THE EARLY 1970s DUE TO THE OIL EMBARGO IN THE ARAB MIDDLE EAST OIL PRODUCTING NATIONS.   A LOW HORSEPOWER RATING ON PAPER MEANT EASIER COMPLIANCE WITH NEW GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS OF EMISSIONS WITHOUT HAVING TO DO A COMPLETE REDESIGN OF THE ENGINES THEMSELVES.   THE ENGINE'S ORIGINAL TWO-BARREL CARBURETOR HAS BEEN RETAINED ALONG WITH THE FACTORY CAST IRON INTAKE MANIFOLD AND ORIGINAL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY.   THE ORIGINAL EXHAUST MANIFOLDS HAVE ALSO BEEN RETAINED ALONG WITH THE PAINTED VALVE COVERS.   THE ORIGINAL AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM IS PRESENT AND COMPLETE BUT NOT CURRENTLY CHARGED UP WITH FREON.   THE IGNITION HAS BEEN UPGRADED TO AN AFTERMARKET PERTRONIX ELECTRONIC IGINITION.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

THE ENGINE IS MATED TO A THREE-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WHICH IS IN VERY GOOD WORKING CONDITION.   THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS IN VERY GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION.   THE FIREWALL RETAINS THE CAR'S ORIGINAL PAINT.   THE BATTERY IS SECURELY FITTED.

 

 

THE INTERIOR IS IN GENERALLY EXCELLENT ORIGINAL CONDITION.   THE ORIGINAL FRONT BUCKET AND REAR VINYL SEATS ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.   THE CARPET IS IN VERY GOOD ORIGINAL CONDITION AS IS THE HEADLINER ASSEMBLY.   THE DASH PAD IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO CRACKS SEEN.   THE DASH IS EQUIPPED WITH A 120 MPH SPEEDOMETER. TACHOMETER. FUEL GAUGE. TEMPERATURE GAUGE. AMPERAGE GAUGE. OIL PRESSURE GAUGE AND A CLOCK.   THE CAR'S ORIGINAL THREE-SPOKE RIM BLOW STEERING WHEEL IS IN VERY GOOD WORKING CONDITION.   THE ORIGINAL PHILCO AM RADIO IS RETAINED.

 

 

THE CAR WAS STARTED AND MOVED BUT NOT DRIVEN DURING THE INSPECTION.   THE ENGINE STARTED EASILY AND RAN WELL.   NO ABNORMAL ENGINE NOISES WERE HEARD AND NO EXHAUST SMOKE WAS SEEN.   THE CAR'S ORIGINAL OWNER'S MANUAL. MAINTENANCE MANUAL AND FACTORY 6 VOLUME SHOP MANUAL REMAIN WITH THE CAR. IN ADDITION TO THE OWNERCARD. LETTER FROM FORD'S NOW DEFUNCT HISTORICAL DEPARTMENT. AND OTHER DOCUMENTS OF NOTE. PLUS AN EXTRA OWNER'S MANUAL. IN A-1 CONDITION.   I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR FROM 36. 24 MILES IN OCTOBER OF 2012 UP TO THE PRESENT MILEAGE OF 39. 83 MILES. MOSTLY LONG-DISTANCE HIGHWAY DRIVING. AND I ATTEST TO ITS VERY GOOD RIDE AND SOLID 1970'S STABILITY.

 

EVALUATION:

THE MERCURY MONTEGO GT WAS ONLY PRODUCED IN 1972 AND 1973 AND WAS VIRTUALLY UNCHANGED BETWEEN THE TWO MODEL YEARS APART FROM THE MUCH MORE MASSIVE FRONT BUMPER IN THE 1973 MODEL.   4. 64 1973 MODELS WERE PRODUCED COMPARED TO 5. 20 IN THE 1972 MODEL YEAR.   SEVERAL ENGINES WERE AVAILABLE WHICH INCLUDED THE 302 CID V8. 351 4-BARREL V8. 400 V8. 429 V8 AND THE 351 2-BARREL V8 SUCH AS THE ENGINE IN THIS CAR.   THIS WAS THE MOST COMMON MONTEGO GT ENGINE WITH 2. 62 SO EQUIPPED IN 1973.

THIS PARTICULAR EXAMPLE HAS BENEFITED FROM LONG TERM DEDICATED OWNERSHIP AND A RECENT EXTERIOR RESTORATION THAT WAS FINISHED TO A HIGH LEVEL.   IT IS NOW IN VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT OVERALL CONDITION AND COMMANDS A VALUATION NEAR THE TOP OF THE CURRENT 351 2-BARREL EQUIPPED 1973 MONTEGO GT MARKET.
