1928 Riley 9 Two-Seater Special
Registration no. HJ 8495

You are bidding for my super little Riley 9 Special. The car started out life in 1928 as a Monaco saloon. and after heavy use by its first owner was sold after WW2 as a project car to Maurice Bird. Maurice set about making the Riley into a road worthy car once more and disposed of the tired body. The chassis was shortened and a two seater body built for the car. The engine was rebuilt along with the gearbox and axles. It was put back on the road in the early 1960s and much campaigned with the Vintage Sports-Car Club and used as his daily car for a while.

The Riley was then garaged for some time until it was purchased by James (Alf) Ingham in the mid 1990s. Alf carried out the required re-commissioning job on the Riley that included an engine rebuild incorporating a cylinder head. high compression pistons. re-profiled camshaft and larger vales. He fitted the two rear spare wheels and then continued to use the car on Vintage Sports-Car Club Trials were we won quite a few awards.

The Riley was then sold to John Ashton in 2006 who used it as a road car for high days and holidays. owning it for 5 or so years until I bought the car from him.

During my ownership the Riley was sent to Jeremy Brewster who is a very good pre-war mechanic for various jobs to be carried out. The major items being the fitment of twin SU carburetors. tidying the wiring loom. new cooling hoses and a thorough service. There is a bill on file of circa £1. 00 for these works. The Riley has also had two new front leaf springs fitted from the Riley Specialist Keith Pointing (£500).

The Riley is in good mechanical order. starting on the first turn of the engine. Displays good oil pressure and pulls well. The silent third Riley gearbox has a remote selector that allow easy gear changes. The brakes are very good. and the car pulls up in a straight line without any fuss. Fitted with a modern radiator and expansion tank. has a cooling fan fitted. The engine has a tuned length exhaust system.

The cosmetic condition of the Riley is ok. it was brush painted Red a few years ago by Alf and is still presentable but if you wanted to really improve it a repaint and trim would really make it look the business. There are some chips on the paintwork. and rubbing where the bonnet closes on the scuttle.

The speedo is not currently working as the cable is broken. but otherwise is ready to go. I would happily drive this Riley to Scotland. it runs great. sounds well and puts a smile on your face!
