For sale by auction on Saturday 30 November 2013 with Historics at Brooklands. Brooklands Motor Racing Circuit. Weybridge. Surrey. Call 01753 639170 or 0
Introduced early in 1971. this impressive two-seater sports car
replaced the 280 SL. The body and chassis of the 3 rd generation SL
was considerably heavier and longer than its predecessor. but still
showed a slight resemblance to them. The front and rear axles were
similar to those of the 200-250 models. with independent wheel
suspension using double wishbones and anti-dive control at the
front and a diagonal swing axle at the rear. four-speed automatic
transmission was available as an option. The 3. 5 litre. V 8 engine
underwent slight modifications to those being used on other models
and the gear shift lever was placed on the floor in the centre of
the car. The standard transmission provided a top speed of 130 mph
and a very respectable 0-62 mph in 8. 8 seconds. As with the previous
generation SL's. the vehicle came as an open roadster with
removable hard top roof.
The R 107 body shape went on to
become one of the longest running styles from Mercedes-Benz. br/>remaining in production until 1989 with some 13 variants during the
production run.
Originally registered on 4 th February 1982. this 380 SL benefits
from having a recent exhaust system and hood. The gold coachwork is
in good order as is the chestnut leather trim. VPG 521 X has the
desirable rear seat fitted and comes with the hard top for winter
use. The current vendor is a classic car enthusiast and we are
advised that this fine example drives exactly as she should with no
known faults. Supplied with a V 5 registration document and a full
year's Mo T test certificate. given the rise in R 107 prices of late
this one looks to be outstanding value.
