Current customer rating:
Volkswagen MK 1 Caddy Pickup 1986 1.6 TD 5 Speed manual.
Your looking at a 1.6 TD SB engine code with an 020 gearbox from which I'm assuming has been taken from a mk 2 golf. Previous owner didn't really know.
I've owned this caddy for the last 3 years (since June 2019), where it's been used as a daily through out summer and stored through winter, as-well as a weekend warrior taking the bikes out.
I bought the vehicle without an MOT and non runner. So pretty standard!
Day 1 of the caddy it needed a alternator belt, service, fuel filter as well as the passenger outer sill had a fair sized hole which needed cutting out and welding before putting through an MOT. .
Once this was all done, got it MOT'd which failed, repaired everything to get it through and then drove it for a while, then realised I was being gassed by the exhaust fumes as there was only 1 stud holding the exhaust in place. Found all the other 3 studs snapped inside the turbo, which resulted in a new turbo. Then upon removal of the exhaust manifold to access the removal of turbo we snapped a stud within the engine. Long story short, replaced the Cylinder head, got it skimmed and new tappets and head gasket to go on.
Drove around for a while again, then decided I had enough with the iffy wiring from previous jobs, had a few instances where lights wouldn't work or radio would decide to switch off. So pulled all of the looms out, removed everything that wasn't required, made the harness ‘safe' because I wouldn't call the original safe in areas and re fitted, and also hid as much as I could through the wings giving a more stealth look to the engine bay.
Next big job was the rear window, or top of bulk head, rusted heavily, so we ended up cutting it out, pulling it up, cleaning it up and welding a new plate over.
Then the last biggest job we completed was the scuttle panel, where rust had started to really agitate around the windscreen, so pulled it out. Cleaned it all right up, welded up the LH drive holes that weren't necessary, primed and sprayed. And decided to do the bonnet while we were at it as we had paint to spare.
So that's the majority of the large scale of jobs that's happened since my ownership. Now I never planned to sell her, but I've got a donor car and due to the risk involved I'm planning on using a Caddy shell now instead of a half decent caddy.
This caddy I would say is at the stage now where it just needs all of the smaller touch up bits done for completing, Mainly bodywork/Paintwork. Unless someone's planning a 1.8 T, VR 6 or a more standard engine swap then this'll probably be ideal.
Also have photo's of the project throughout my ownerships of all the jobs undertaken.
Good bits:
Porsche tombstone 944 electric seats
1.6 TD engine, super tuneable.
New turbo
New alternator
Full custom stainless exhaust
Lowered all round (Adjustable front + 25 mm Rear blocks with flipped axle)
KONI sport yellow rear dampers
Majority of the bigger welding jobs are completed.
MOT until 24/05/22 (should pass again just needs rear fog light fitting, Wiring hidden so plug and play)
Disk brakes upfront + 231 mm rear drums
Brakes freshly bled within the last 6 months.
7” Led Headlights with Indicator/side light integrated.
Freshly re-sprayed bonnet and scuttle panel
Banded steel alloys (vinyl sprayed so can be pealed off, currently in primer underneath)
New Sach's 210 mm clutch kit
New starter motor
New Glow plugs
New Radiator
Oil Changed basically twice a year
Coolant also changed yearly due to amount of times
I've
had to empty it
Handbrake cable replaced.
Will come with brand new Poly-Bush's for Leaf spring
What I think needs doing:
interior carpets (although I was never going to put carpets in so personal choice, Although this does make it Noisy as there's no sound deadening)
Dashboard could do with a refurb. Re-spray/Touch up on paintwork (primer starting to show through on panels, scratches in areas, ding on wing, mismatch rear window area due to using a rattle can at the time. I also never saw any point doing a full respray until majority of rust areas were gone, And now
I've
decided to get a shell)
Small ding on wing
Tailgate needs straightening + small dent on lower.
Likely needs a new instrument cluster if it bothers you (Rev counter never worked, even after going through wiring diagrams, mileage no longer goes up) MPH Clock works but shaky. Also Oil pressure light is odd. When engine is up to temperature and when your NOT not accelerating it goes nuts, but when your accelerating it's normal. I've been on journeys longer than 2 hours so i know it can't be serious.
Clutch slips on high revs (clutch has been replaced as it was much worse, but still slips slightly)
Would benefit from new door cards Cable clutch - Hydraulic would be a pleasant upgraded Heater box removed. I've loved this Caddy, it's just awesome. But too far along to be cut up for what my next intentions are.
Reg - D 429 MTM. Tax - About £280 Last year
MOT - Until 22 nd May 2022
V 5 C Present.
