Up for sale is this lovely 2 door Morris Minor 1000 from 1958, finished in black with red leatherette interior. This car is a lovely example of a Moggy, which drives nicely and presents itself very well indeed. Fitted with a 948cc engine, she has all the wonderful features of these earlier moggies, including the clap hand wipers, smaller front side lights (converted to indicators) and the gorgeous interior of the pre-'62 cars. She appears to do everything that is asked of her and would make an ideal usable classic just as she is, but could also stand to be taken to the next level if you so desired. It appears to be a remarkably sound example, with no rot that we can find on the bodywork, clean panel gaps, and it behaves itself on the road very nicely indeed. There are only four previous owners on the log book, and the car seems to have been very well cared for during its lifetime.

Bodily, as you can see, the car comes up beautifully. Everything appears to be very straight and solid, and the usual moggy rot spots (door bottoms, under the rear window, trailing edges of the front wings etc) are all in quite good order. The car has had a respray at some point in its life, and while the paintwork isn't immaculate, and there are of course a few small areas of grazing, cracking and polishing swirls, there is nothing that I feel detracts from the overall appearance of the car. The panel gaps are nice, and the door edges sit nice and straight, rather than flaring out as they do on so many examples that we see. The trafficators have been blanked off, with rear indicators added, and the front sidelights converted - which is a far more elegant solution than simply drilling holes for new flashers, and one that is always nice to see on these earlier cars! The underside of the car appears to be in good order too, and the boot floor, inner wings and spring hangers are just as they should be. Whilst it has had welding in the past (how many moggies haven't?), there's nothing that I can see that should be of any cause for concern. I have added many photos below showing as much as I can, so please do have a look!

The interior really is a lovely place to be, and smells fantastic too! The leatherette used in this era of the Minor is very hard-wearing, and other than a seam that has come undone on the driver's seat backrest, which I'm sure could be easily fixed if needed, it is in very good condition indeed. The headlining is perfect, and the carpets appear to be quite new too. I particularly love the banjo steering wheel with solid centre cap on the ‘58-'60 cars, and the dual glovebox lids. The indicator/horn stalk doesn't appear to work, and instead the indicators have been wired to a switch on the dashboard, although of course, it would not be difficult to reinstate a replacement, should you wish. The horn needs to be wired up, and could easily be done so with a dash mounted switch, or with a replacement stalk if the new owner were to reinstate one. There are seatbelts fitted to the front too, which is surely a must for any classic being used as a daily car.

On the road, this car demonstrates all the wonderful traits that we love Moggies for! It won't be setting any speed records, and the brakes aren't like those in a modern car, but the engine pulls very nicely, (and always starts on the first pull of the button!), and the car stops cleanly in a straight line. As is common on the 948cc models, the synchromesh is a little worn on second and third, but all the gears select fine. The car is remarkably free from so many of the clonks, rattles and squeaks that we come to expect from cars of a certain age, and feels very sure-footed. The steering is light and positive too, and it really does feel very ‘together' on the road.

All in all, this is a very sweet little thing, that has many happy years of motoring ahead of it, and would be perfectly suited to using as a daily runaround, or kept in the garage for pottering about on a sunny weekend. Whilst she's not a pristine example, she is an absolutely beautiful thing, and I wouldn't be in a rush to do anything other than routine maintenance in the coming years, in order to preserve her as she is right now. I do think you'd be hard pushed to find a nicer, more original example than this at this price point too. These make fantastic cars for young drivers, not least because the Morris Minor Owners Club (well worth joining for the spares and support alone) have a partnership with Footman James to offer cheap insurance for under 25s. Of course, there may be small problems that present themselves as time goes on, but there really isn't anything else that we are aware of that should be any cause for concern at all. Spares are readily available, and as so much routine maintenance is possible with only basic mechanical know-how and a limited tool selection, it really does make for an incredibly practical classic.

These are unprecedented times for buying cars, so whilst the car is located in Halifax, nationwide delivery is available at incredibly reasonable prices, so please don't hesitate to get in touch for a quote. I would be very happy to give any prospective buyer a video call to show them around the car if it would help, and there are plenty of photos below. That said, whilst I feel I have described and photographed the car as accurately and honestly as I can, there is of course no substitute for seeing the car in the flesh (whilst adhering to COVID rules and Social Distancing guidelines, of course). I would always prefer the car to be fully inspected first before any money changing hands, to ensure that you are totally happy. As with any classic, there may be small niggly problems that come to light over time that we are not aware of, but the car is described above as truthfully as is possible. The car is of course sold as seen, with no warranty implied or given.

We are always looking for good quality classics, so part exchanges are always welcome!
