I bought this 1961 Metropolitan a couple of years ago from the family that purchased it new.  A few years after their aunt passed away. they had the original engine rebuilt. replaced the clutch. and had the transmission inspected.  However. nbsp;after another death in the family and a dispute over the car. they parked it in the back of their shop where it sat for a few more years. After a few conversations trying to buy it. they eventually sold it to me. It runs fantastic and even though it hadn't been licensed since 1999. I drove it home without any issues.
Pros: The car runs. shifts. stops. and drives fantastic. No leaks. no engine smoke. nbsp;and no blow-by. I replaced all the brakes. replaced the clutch slave cylinder with a new Wilwood unit. had all 5 wheels powder coated. purchased 5 new radial tires. had the radio repaired. new tail light lenses and bezels. new voltage regulator. rebuilt the generator. new battery. rebuilt the carburetor. flushed the fuel system. had it painted the original color. installed a new windshield. new windshield seal. coated the floor in POR15. replaced the exhaust system. new outside mirrors.   All of the electrical works properly and the OEM wiring harness has not been modified. The parking lights. headlights. high beams. taillights. brake lights. turn signals. horn. dash lights. radio. fuel gauge. speedometer. heater all work as they should. Before being painted. the car still had the original paint and absolutely zero rust and no dents. It only had a few door dings. The trunk. floors. uni-body. battery box. and engine compartment are rust free. The only rust in this car was a rust hole on the drivers side floor roughly the size of a quarter. This was cut out and a new piece of 16ga sheet metal welded in. The car has lived it's life in a dry desert climate. I have the chrome trim for the grill although it's not like new. All the glass is in excellent condition.   I have the original jack for the car as a well as extra parts. Every part that I bought for the car was from a Metropolitan online restoration company.
Cons:The interior is original and clearly needs to be replaced. the front seat and headliner are torn and damaged from the desert heat. That's the trade off to the desert. No rust but interiors don't survive. So plan on buying a complete reproduction interior kit for it. The wipers try and work but the cables either need to be taken off and lubricated or replaced. The rear window seal should be replaced only because it's the original and it looks bad. The bumpers are perfectly straight but the chrome isn't very bright.
I drove this car quite a bit and it keeps up with traffic just fine. I wouldn't be afraid to drive this car anywhere. Other than the interior and a few cosmetic issues. this is a great little car and I hate to sell it. I have significant health issues now and I just can't finish it. I will answer every question honestly. Even though it needs a new home. I will not mislead anyone. My integrity is more important than the sale.
I have a reserve on the car but I feel like it's very low and it's much less than I have invested. I do not have the car listed for sale anywhere else so I will not end this auction. It's very likely that I might remove the reserve.
