1979 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon

We purchased our 1979 Westy in 1995.

From the documents we have it appears that it came in to the country through Vancouver. Washington and has always been in the Pacific Northwest.

It is currently located in Port Townsend. Washington. Since our ownership we had the engine and transmission professionally rebuilt in 1999.

When we first owned the Westy we used it quite a lot and even a wonderful month long trip in the Southwest but after that life happened and with a full life it mostly sat in our garage.

It has 113. 00 miles on the vehicle with 12. 00 miles on the rebuilds.

From day one of the engine rebuild it has this intermittent light knocking at idle.

We have had it checked out by 3 different mechanics and have gotten 3 different answers: 1) lifters 2)don't know 3) a connecting rod bearing. At this point we are not certain what it is or if it is anything to be concerned about.

The engine runs strong and the transmission is sound.

Rust locations: battery compartments. at the step on the passenger side. very minor rust at some window seals & around rear engine hatch lever. Photos of these spots attached.

Body:

Good shape except a scratch on sliding door & minor dings. It was painted original color in 1996.

Camper top: Very good condition.

It is the original with no holes.

Screens in good shape.

Propane system & stove removed

Refrigerator (works on 120 v AC. Not sure on DC) & sink still in place. Both in good condition.

Lots of original cabinetry in very good condition. Great storage.

Electrical system is original and in good shape. It works as designed.

Headliner in good shape.

Front seats original with no holes or tears.

Rear Seat has been reupholstered but does have a cut in upholstery about 4 inches long.

Cover for firewall is missing.

Dash is complete & in good condition

Side & rear hatch doors need new formica panels inside as the original panels are cracked

Brakes: new master cylinder and rear brake cylinders & shoes. New emergency brake cables.

Fuels system: fuel level sending unit is going out

Horn not working

Possibly needs a starter

Our Westy "Brownie" is difficult to part with after 21 years of ownership but we feel it needs new energy.

We have enjoyed it in its current condition but it wouldn't take too much to restore it to its original 1979 details.
