Best of Both Worlds-240 Z With A 2 JZ-GTE
1972 Datsun 240 Z. powered by a 1994 US Spec Supra Twin Turbo Engine
Why: To have the awesome power of a Supra and the weight a 240 Z.
I seem to be on a never ending quest to build the Ultimate USCA (Ultimate optima search for the Ultimate Street Car Association)/ Drag car/ Street car.
I wanted a car with big power and a light chassis.
This car started as an extremely clean 1972 240 Z. see picture at the gas station on the day I bought the car in early 2004. The car had very straight sheet metal and was someones garage queen.
Since I was intrigued with the Toyota Supra's tremendous power potential. I bought a salvaged low mile 1994 Toyota Twin Turbo Supra (US version)( see pics).
The 240 Z was then stripped and stitch welded to increase it rigidity (see pic). The 2 JZ-GTE Twin turbo engine was placed as far back and as low as reasonable to achieve a 50/50 weight distribution. It is paired with the original V 160 6-speed manual. (This type of combo has been shown to withstand over a 1000 HP when built up. ) An aluminum Fidanza flywheel couple with a new South Bend puck clutch make the car effortless to shift on the road.
In order to make the rest of the drivetrain bulletproof . I used a R 230 differential (over 9"+ ring gear) from a Nissan Armada coupled with an R 230 VLSD (limited slip) from a 300 Zx TT to turn heavy duty 6 bolt CV's and Custom axles from Modern Motorsports to completed the package.
The 1994 Supra Twin Turbo engine (US version steel turbo blades. more durable and powerful) has a basic BPU on it. with an Apex-i AVC-R to control the Boost and an Apex-i SAF-C II Fuel Controller to tune the engine. The engine also has a massive intercooler and cold air intake to keep air charge temperatures down. The drivetrain only has 89 K on it (odometer show it too).
In order to put all the power to the ground. fresh Bridgestone RE 71 245/40/17 real 17 x 9" Cobra R rims were used. The Z has a Modern Motorsports Billet 5 Lug conversion and billet heavy duty Stub axles in the back. The car has coil overs on all four corners and suspension by Fotofab (LCA). Ground Control (coil overs and camber plates). and Modern Motorsports (rear suspension) and their 13" Extreme Brake package on all corners.
To keep things safe. a 22 gallon fuel cell and an 8 point roll cage was professionally installed.
Being is were temperatures reach above 100 degrees regularly. I added a Vintage Air compact AC system (but have not connected/charged it yet).
The car has been street driven as well as occasional track use. (autocross. Ultimate optima search for the Ultimate Street Car Association. Drag racing. etc) and has proven bullet proof.
After the car was complete it was sent to P. J. Bonifacio for paint.
Performance: The dynos 406 RHP (465 engine HP) at 17 PSI. The car can be run at higher boost levels to achieve more power with a touch of a button. The engine and transmission are stock with ONLY(!) 89 k on them.
The car can run on 91 octane for cruising but uses higher octane for full power.
This car currently has a splitter and spoiler but the auction included the original painted front turn signal housings if the a stock look is desired. Also I enjoy the spartan dash board but a complete original 240 Z dash with all gauges and wiring is included in the auction.
The cars shows very well.
Minor Issues the front fender has a minor ding and the car has some paint chips near the tires and a few from to a bicycle falling on it (twice) but still looks very nice.
The car is very powerful but quite docile while not on boost. It can give 20-25+ mpg on the highway due to the 6 speed transmission. Feel free to ask questions.
