Austin J4 Morris Camper Van Day 1961 Bay Split Project Spares or Repair for sale
Current customer rating: (596 votes ) based on55 Year old J4 Day Van/Camper ProjectI dont think its far away from an MOT. Stops . Starts Drives all fitted electrical items workRequires minimal Work for MOT in My Opinion. I have Buff Log book and an Old MOTWill need MOT and new style V5C applying for
I am told this is the Earliest J4 In existence - No Air Vents in Front Panel and a few other Early features from late 60-early 61If you are inexperienced with old vehicles press 'Back' now - I do not want to have to hand hold you or provide comfort through this purchase. In fact I hate hate hate selling cars. This is not a Museum Quality vehicle its a 55 Year old Commercial
This J4 Gets a lot of attention. wherever it goes People stop and want to know all about it- Many people have offered to Buy it in the Past
Engine and Drive Train
The 1500 B Series engine has been replaced with an MGB 1. 8 B Series. It is the same as an MGA 1500 to 1800 Conversion. I have got 2 old 1500 B Series you can have with the van if you want them. The Old engine back plate must be removed and machined to accept the later B series oil seal and various bits ( the early engine doesn't have a big neoprene seal at the rear so can be a bit oily)Running a New New Old Stock 1"3/4 single SU from a 1. 8 Marina. Air Filter fitted. all fits under the seat will just top 1/4 " of carb touching inspection plate. You can either Put a hole saw through the inspection plate or Trim the top of the SU and shorten the damper by the same amount ( its an unheard of Method But I've done this before with a Previous vehicle and it works lovely. The 1500 was 50 BHP I am told an MGB 1. 8 is 90 BHP. it certainly has more Zoom Zoom. The Van will start and Yard drive with a jump packThe Gearbox in a J4 is unusual as the H pattern is reversed. Known as 'The Chinese Box'Clutch Master Cylinder. nbsp;Reservoir and slave Cylinder all new from Past partsPetrol tank has been off . pened up and chemically cleaned inside. resealed and coated by a local company. New petrol pump and line fitted. New oil in Engine. Gearbox and DiffSingle Exhaust Box fitted to MGB Front pipe.
Brakes. Suspension and Tyres
The Previous owner replaced all the Hoses and pipesI have also Replaced the 4 front Brake cylinder and the Master Cylinder and dual Reservoir. Rear cylinders look newish. all 4 adjusters free and serviceable. Brakes work really well. will benefit from further adjustment when a few road miles go on them like Drums doHand brake works but is not Powerful like Modern stuff . Fresh Brake fluid Obviously I have had fitted a New Set of Tyres 4 X 165 60 14 in a Very Good Make for Safety- The Brand escapes my Memory for now. New grease Nipples fitted where I could see one was required and all Greased up. I cannot detect any Excessive Play anywhere so beleive the Steering and Suspension to be serviceable as it is currently. The J4 Sits on Coils at the fronts and Carts at the rear- Would look awesome slammed.
Electrical
The Loom is horrible. I will say that again Horrible - just so we are sure. I did have a replacement Loom from Auto Sparks in mind. I enquired and they can manufacture a J4 Loom with Alternator instead of Dynamo for £150ish 3-4 weeks lead time. The Van is Fitted with a New Alternator and Electronic Ignition with New distributer and Sports coil for reliability. iper work. Indicators work. Main. side and dipped Lights work. Horn Works. adio works ( No number plate lamp fitted. will need one for MOT)
Body and Trim
The van had been dry stored for many many years prior to my ownership. These J4s normally rot very quickly thats why they are very thin on the ground. I have looked at other J4s described as Good and all the seems are swollen. this on is Good. Very Very Minimal welding if at all required. All the doors are Rot Free underneath. I haven't got a door key but its only an FS key and the number is visible inside (£3 for a key. I have ignition and back door keys)I am reasonably confident this will go through an MOT without too much drama. it is not too rusty in the places for MOT. Strangely a Previous owner coated the entire vehicle Inside . utside and underneath with Gold Hammerite. He must of had a lot of time on his hands. This preserved it amazingly well. Underneath is not covered in underseal hiding everything but old gold Hammerite. He must of spent many Hours scrapping all the underseal off and then painting it underneath. I have the missing Rear door handle with key.
There are two camps of thought with the finish of the van-
1. When you going to restore it Mr?2. Don't touch it just clear coat the entire Camper.
The Hammerite is flaking off . I think a good pressure washer would get it off and lose all the Character in the process. I like it as it is and would simply clear coat it and run it as is for a year or two. Looks to have been Three colours in its life. Grey then Blue and now Gold that's flaking offThere is an old repair on the offside above wheel arch where a dent has been filled. nd a dent pulled out by it
A wooden style Modern HDF waterproof floor is fitted over insulation ready for your Rock and roll bed installationAll behind the trim and roof liner is also insulated with Heavy Fibre MattingCamper curtains fitted all round ( Nothing for screen though)Front seats are serviceable but obviously 55 years old. I have fitted a new Adjustable Camper roof Vent with flyscreen. The old one was missing its top part. Interior has Original Roof Liner fitted front to back. It left Factory as a Camper or Mini Coach I Believe. Just Smaller than a Bay Window VW and Much shorter.
A chap from a Film Vehicle Agency recently commented that he would of used it for a Peter Kay production where Peter was a school boy in the 70s and wanted a period Mini Bus. He said Once its up list it on the Film Vehicle sites and it would get work.

1. To Clarify - This J4 does not need any machining to the back plate- the whole conversion has been done 100%. The old 1500 engines used to leak as they didn't have a rear oil seal. This one has the Newer B series with Big Neoprene seal at the rear.
