Renault 16TL 1977. These gorgeous and elegant cars are a very rare sight nowadays and surely a sound investment. I have fantastic memories of these cars from my childhood. My dad had 3 of them and during the 80's I had a couple of very rotten TX's but loved them just the same.
As you can see from the pics the car is in very straight and original condition. It has the French Controle Technique (Normale) until August 2017. I have the Carte Grise in my name also.
I bought the car 3 years ago from a gentleman on the French/Spanish border. He had owned it for most of its life. It hadn't been run for many years but was very straight and solid. I thought it would be ripe for bringing back to the UK and restoring to its former glory.
That plan changed however and I shipped it up to our house in the Tarn area. where it currently is. I got the car up and running. Fitted a new battery. several NOS Renault parts to the suspension including all ball joints. track rod ends etc. Fitted a clean and rust free fuel tank. fuel line. NOS fuel pump and a Weber manual twin choke carb. I also sourced some new headlamps and light lenses. All these parts were sourced from the Renault 16 guru Mike Stokes back in England. The cooling system is fine. no overheating . the fan cuts in when and where it should.
At this point I decided that I'd leave it in its current state and just enjoy it as it is. It passed its French CT and since then its been used regularly. The last 6 weeks through the summer has seen it just cruising around the countryside lanes here. Its amazing how many people are attracted to the car even in its "patina'd" state!!
It starts perfectly. runs without a problem. although it could do with a tune up. Every thing works as it should. The panels are straight and solid. All the trim is there. There are an odd rust blister or two and there are a couple of dents at the front of the bonnet.
The main issue with the car is that the sun has caused the lacquer to peel away from the paint . see pic. and could really do with repainting. The sun has also damaged the nylon on the seats. The vinyl edges and backs are fine.
As far as legalising it in the UK is concerned. it will need some welding to the floor and some to the right hand sill. I'd regard this as very straightforward repair for anyone with a MIG. All the structural areas are solid.
As I mentioned previously the car is situated in the Tarn area of France. You could enjoy a great road trip home in it or get it trailered back for about £600-£800.
