The Type 14 Karmann Ghia debuted at the October 1953 Paris Auto Show as a styling concept created by the Italian firm Ghia and shortly afterwards VW contracted with German coachbuilder Karmann for its manufacture. In contrast to the Beetle's machine welded-body with bolt-on fenders. the Karmann Ghia's body panels were welded on. hand-shaped and smoothed with English pewter in a time-consuming process commensurate with higher-end manufacturers and resulted in the Karmann Ghia's higher price.
It was marketed as a practical and stylish coupe or convertible rather than as a true sports car. As they shared engines. the Type 14's engine displacement grew concurrently with the Type 1 (Beetle). ultimately arriving at a displacement of 1584cc which produced 60hp as seen in the car we are offering for sale here today. Produced until 1974 the Karmann Ghia is one of Ghia's most commercially successful designs.

This stunning late model example originates from Arizona which accounts for the superb rust free condition of the bodywork and has recently arrived with us direct from the States. The bodywork is unrestored. original and rust free factory steel whilst the paintwork is finished to a very high standard in a delightfully period and unmarked powder blue. The contrasting black hood and interior are in a similarly superb condition and mechanically it performs really well on the road and has the nice option of factory air conditioning fitted.
The recorded mileage shows a little over 21. 00 miles from new and is believed to be genuine although this cannot be substantiated. The condition of the car is commensurate with what one would expect from a very low mileage vehicle.
This is likely to be the best example of a late model Type 14 convertible available anywhere at the moment.
These delightful little cars are rewarding to drive and offer the reliability and robustness of the tried and tested Beetle coupled to a beautiful hand crafted design. It has just sailed through it's first MOT prior to UK registration and is all ready for Spring and it's new owner.
