1973 Pontiac Grand Ville Convertible

A little history might be appropriate before we get into the description of this car.   As many Pontiac enthusiasts and collectors already know. during the 1950s and 1960s the Bonneville was the top of the line for the biggest and best Pontiac.   However by 1973 Pontiac had made the Grand Ville the top of the line (demoting the Bonneville to one level under it) and had also Pontiac installed the 455 cubic inch engine with the turbo Hydramatic transmission its more powerful car. all Grand Villes included power steering. power brakes. power front disk brakes.   Air conditioning was an option but very few convertibles had this option as the psychology from the 1950s to the 1970s was that if you had a convertible. air conditioning was wasted because you would always have the top down.   This means that today finding a Pontiac Grand Ville convertible with air conditioning is extremely rare and adds a lot of extra value to the car.

From 1971 until 1973 the Grand Ville was extremely popular but the 1974 oil embargo put a squeeze on the desirability of such a large car.   Grand Ville convertibles were very rare in the years 1971 to 1975. never topping more then 5. 00 per year and the Grand Villes were Pontiac's only full size convertibles.

What is not generally known about the Grand Ville is that the entire frontend design was sketched out by DeLorean in the late 60s but never used until it was applied to the Grand Ville.   It is interesting to note that the Grand Ville had the lowest production of a full size convertible when compared to its cousins. Oldsmobile. Buick and Cadillac and making a Grand Ville extremely rare.

The Grand Ville convertible in this ad with relatively low mileage being that it has under 75. 00 miles and the current owner has had it for ten years.  Within the last ten years the car was restored cosmetically and mechanically. original engine rebuilt at a cost of $17. 00. 00.   Since that time a few bubbles have appeared (see photos).   When the car was repainted it was repainted in its original color and the car does have the four original Rally wheels.   The interior is the original white interior and makes for a very attractive color scheme with the beautiful blue paint (undoubtedly the most desirable).

This car is a great driver but does need some TLC including a new top (current top is ok but is starting to shrink a little) and perhaps a new trunk mat and could use carpet although the existing carpet is serviceable.

Keep in mind that the major plus on this car is that it is a Grand Ville convertible which there are very few. it has the 455 cubic inch engine and is painted the original factory blue color and has the original interior and is relatively low mileage.   Most people would consider this a delightful ‘boat' to cruise in because of the fantastic ride and would be great for touring the countryside or driving to the local Saturday night drive in.

The car has been used in the last ten years and it has picked up a few nicks and chips and a few bubbles in the paint (see photos in video).   The great news is that this car has air conditioning and while it is not blowing cold it is the factory air conditioning.   We can tell you that there are not very many Grand Villes and of those just a handful have factory air conditioning. extremely rare item that adds a lot of extra value to the car.

All that being said in the above the owner has put a reserve on this car that might be more appropriate for a 1973 Pontiac four door sedan…in other words the reserve is so low it might as well not have one.   If you are looking for a show winning Pontiac all done. ready to go. this might not be the car for you…but if you are looking for a car that is a fantastic model. low production with the cherry at the top being air conditioned (needs a charge) convertible. with the original deluxe factory wheels and you don't mind spending a little time and effort to make it even sharper then this could be the car for you!

We know our friends in Australia. New Zealand. Canada & Japan love the GM “big boat” convertibles of the 70s with the enormous 455 engines and we encourage you to bid but ask that you call first 847-774-4857 (Chicago USA 10:00 a. m. to 10:00 p. m.
