Sum – up

Being heavily wax-oiled over its life the body and underside is pristine as you will see by the pictures. An absolute joy to drive and admired by virtually every passer by. Once behind the wheel. your transported back to another time and place. A place where petrol and houses are cheap…. A place where the Osmans . Elvis and Slade are still having hit records…. A place where The Persuaders. Upstairs Downstairs and the Onedin line are the most viewed British T. V shows…. Oh and power cuts. the 3 day week and flares!

Background to the model

Designed by Jaguar founder/chairman Sir William Lyons. The Series One XJ was launched in September 1968 at the cost of £6 million going on design. development and tooling. In 1969 the XJ6 won car of the year which contributed to the 5 extremely successful years achieving more sales orders than they could deliver. Waiting lists were sometimes 2 years which was partly down to every motoring press review boasting this new car from Jaguar as being the best luxury car in the world – regardless of price. In September 73 the series Two was launched using the same mechanics but with subtle interior/exterior changes. March 1979 saw the launch of the Piniforina styled series Three which again was still powered by the classic XK engine (with fuel injection) and the superb V12. These were built until 1986 and 1992 respectively. For the series One Jaguar offered Three engine options which were the very tried and tested XK in 2. 8 or 4. 2 forms then in July 72 the 5. 3 V12. The XK engine had been launched in 1949 to power the XK120 and also were fitted to Jaguar's Le-man C/D Type winning racers of the 50′s. Jaguar had their most racing success in the 1950′s using this power plant achieving wins in 53. 55. 56 and 57.
