1954 Studebaker Champion

This car was custom built by Schraders Speed and Style. out of Auza. CA. Owner Mike Abssy wanted a daily driver which would perform at dry lakes events. He utilized the car for six months on the streets of Azuza. never taking it to a timing event.

The motor is an LS based iron block 5. 3 (323 inches) from a 2003 Silverado. It has PAC valve springs. a Speed Inc. TUI camshaft. custom pushrods. ARP head bolts. and GM multi layer steel head gaskets. Otherwise the long block is stock. The oil pan is a modified 2004 Corvette piece.

The fuel system consists of 60 lb/hour injectors. a Bosch 044 fuel pump. and a custom fuel cell in the trunk.

The turbo system is made up of a Master Power T76 turbo. a custom made air to air intercooler and wastegate/blow off valve from Turbo Concepts.  All the turbo piping is custom made with the hot and cold side charge piping done in aluminum. The downpipe is done in 3” mild steel and the rest of the exhaust is 3” through a Hooker Aerochamber muffler. a cutout is also installed. There is a cockpit accessible manual boost controller which allows the driver to add or subtract up to 8 lbs of boost by twisting a knob.

The transmission is a T56 6 speed double overdrive unit from a 2005 Pontiac GTO. It is coupled to the motor with a stock steel flywheel and a Spec Stage 2 dual friction clutch. The rear axle is a Ford Explorer unit with 3. 07 gears and a Tru Trac posi unit. There is also vintage Traction Master traction bars to control wheel hop.

The radiator is based on an FSR stock car triple pass three row unit that has been extensively modified for this custom application and fitted with a Spal electric fan.

On the dyno we were unable to make full passes due to the rear tires. which were severely distorting above 4400 rpms under load. On only 10 lbs of boost we saw 430 hp at the rear wheels  (505 crank hp) at 4400 rpms. The motor pulls to 6000. At 6000 we should see well over 500 to the tire (about 575 crank hp). This was done on 91 octane pump gas. There is enough turbo and fuel system to make about 700 rear wheel hp (785 crank hp) with this setup.

I purchased the car at the Detroit Autorama in 2013. and added the aluminum interior panels. lettering. and moon caps. The paint is original 1954. and patina is real. The sheet metal is excellent. only the rear trunk body mounts were replaced with repo panels. There is no rust. repair panels or bondo on this car. This is a true California car.
