One of only 4. 24 Pontiac Safaris produced in 1956. According to the Automotive Information Clearing House. as of 11/3/04 [ten years ago] only 302 of them were known to still be in existence even back then. An all original SURVIVOR. which has NEVER to my knowledge been painted or had any restoration. It has been maintained and repaired over those 58 years. of course. Last owner used this as occasional daily driver around town!  It drives nice; everything works. even the radio and clock. all lights; knobs and handles inside and out are all present and work well.   Amazing condition for age. My mechanic just went through it. tuned it. new brake drums. Drive it away!
The engine block. heads and exhaust manifold only are from a 1958 Pontiac (370 cu. in. ) Strato-Streak engine. but all other engine components appear to be date correct to this original car and block. This information concluded from my research using Pontiac numbers guide. but this would have to be verified by a Safari expert (they're out there) for absolute certainty. Independent or personal inspection is invited. The extensive handcrafted stainless steel unique to this model and abundant and in place throughout interior and also exterior all in excellent condition too.   This stainless steel detailing and the leather interior contributed to making the Safari Pontiac's most expensive model for 1956! A fancier version of the Chevrolet Nomad. though Nomad was made and remains in greater numbers. Even the humps over wheel wells in cargo area covered in leather with impressive workmanship. Present condition as a survivor presents a difficult decision; i. e. . to keep it as a SURVIVOR or to restore it completely to a $100k++ value range of Safaris when fully restored to like new condition. However. once such a restoration is undertaken it can never be turned back to the wonderful also very desirable untouched original condition it is presently in.   But because of its excellent survivor condition. it would be a perfect platform for such a total restoration. A wonderful car as it stands - certainly within the "10 footer range. "
Car is well documented from last 4 owners (including me) going back decades; most of these owners are probably still with us and traceable. Documentation ranges from receipts for repairs that include the dates and mileage at time of repair (Example: Receipt of 1/22/92 with odometer @ 65. 98 miles: Exhaust repair). Have many more receipts and Bills of Sale as well as a copy of the first known owner's Title. Historical evidence supports that the 74. 47 miles on odometer is correct. Of course. all documentation will go to new owner: the receipts. several of the owners' written communications re car. as well as some quite valuable GM sales brochures and the Owner's Manual. as well as what appears to be a date correct First Aid Kit. I have knowledge of and from last owner and his use of the vehicle over a number of years.
Hagarty presently values a 1956 Safari in this condition at $38. 00 (from past auctions and private sale figures).
