1952 HUDSON HORNET SEDAN

HISTORY

The Hudson Motor Car Company was known for producing durable. well engineered but conservatively styled automobiles. That reputation was to be forever changed on December 7th. 1947 when Hudson introduced their new 1948 models in nationwide showings. Banners proclaimed “This Time It's Hudson”. The cars won instant acclaim from the public. Production had actually begun on October 12th. The tremendous factory conversion effort took only 23 days. Hudson spent $16. 00. 00 for development and new production equipment. The new car was revolutionary in that virtually no parts interchanged with the 1947 models. except the eight cylinder engine. which was essentially the same. The car had the lowest center of gravity and the lowest roofline of any American car without sacrificing headroom. due to the floorpans being attached to the bottom of the frame members instead of the top as all previous American cars had been. While the 1941 Nash 600 had been the first production unibody car. the new Hudson  was significantly  more rugged in construction and offered a sleek new design that was way ahead of the competition. The new body design was termed “Monobilt” because the body structure was of welded all steel construction.

The Legendary Hudson Hornet was introduced for the 1951 model year. They immediately started burning up the racetracks and byways of America. Many improvements were made for the 1952 model as the racing experience pinpointed any weak spots.

The 1952 Hornet Sedan featured in this auction lived its life as a car in Georgia. There is a Georgia inspection sticker on the windshield from 1982. It was barn stored from 1985 until last spring. The mileage is 79. 17. I believe this to be the actual mileage. This car is the desirable late 1952 Hornet equipped with the Dual Range Hydramatic and a Dana 44 3. 07 ratio rear axle. It is also equipped with Radio. heater. directional signals. Ventshades. and Solex tinted glass all around.

              CONDITION

I remember this car as a nice car displayed at some of the Hudson Club events back in the early 1980's. The 28 years it spent in a barn in Northern Indiana were not kind to it! I bought it in a package of cars last summer. It was reported to be a good running and driving car when stored away! The engine turns by the fanblade. It has a non matching numbers engine from a 51 Hornet. I have made no attempt to get it running. It will stop from a low speed as the reserve braking system is still operable. It is very complete including the original bumper jack. It has a really nice uncracked Maroon steering wheel. The car is missing the headliner and carpets. There are two sets of keys. one of which is the original keys. The external plastic park and taillight lenses are nice. I can see it had been converted to 12 volt electrics. It has been repainted at some point from the original Coronation Cream to the current Dark Green. There are some rust holes in the driver's side floor depicted in one of the photos. There is also some deterioration over the fender skirts. It is a southern car and is much better from a rust standpoint than most northern and Midwest cars.  I am starting the bidding at about what it is worth in cores and scrap metal!                                                                                                                          I think this car is a worthy candidate for a full restoration.
