Offered for sale by Barons Classic Car Auctioneers at auction on Tuesday 14 th December, t Sandown Park Racecourse, Esher, KT 10 9 AJ
Hudson Hornets were available as a two-door coupe, four-door sedan, a convertible, and a pillarless hardtop coupe. The models were priced the same as Commodore Eight, which was priced from US$2,543 to $3,099.All Hornets from 1951 to 1953 were powered by Hudson's high-compression straight-six "H-145" engine. Starting in 1952 an optional "twin-H" or twin one barrel carburetor setup was available at additional cost. The newly introduced "Twin H-Power" was available in November 1951 as a Dealer installed option at the cost of $85.60. An electric clock was standard. A L-head (flathead or side-valve) design, at 308 cu in (5.0 L) it was the largest [displacement] six-cylinder engine for mass-production cars the at the time. It had a two-barrel carburetor and produced 145 hp (108 k W) at 3800 rpm and 275 lb⋅ft (373 N⋅m) of torque. In 1954, power was increased to 170 hp (127 k W) from 145 hp (108 k W). The engine was capable of far more power in the hands of precision tuners, including Marshall Teague, who claimed he could get 112 miles per hour (180.2 km/h) from an AAA- or NASCAR-certified stock Hornet, as well as Hudson engineers who developed "severe usage" options (thinly disguised racing parts). The combination of the Hudson engine with overall road-ability of the Hornets, plus the fact the cars were over-designed and over-built, made them unbeatable in competition on the dirt and the very few paved tracks of the 1950 s.
The 1953 Hudson Hornet Twin H power Manual with overdrive offered here is a very rare right hand drive example, supplied to Rhodesia from the USA in right hand drive form. In 1956 it then went to a tobacco farmer in the eastern districts, until the farmer died in 1961, and it was sold to a David Satterwaite who only used the car lightly. In 1985 the car was shipped to Poole in Dorset, where it again saw little use for another 8 years, and it was then sold to Mr E Morgan, again of Poole. In about 1995 the car was sold to Northern Ireland, where it underwent some restoration and there are about six northern Irish Mo T certificates in the history file. The car then returned to the UK mainland, where it still resides.
There are a large number of documents in the history file, including registration documents, invoices, letters, Mo Ts etc to verify this history. The mileage of just over 100,000 miles also seems correct from this history. The car is described by the vendor to be in good condition, and to drive very well, with a remarkable amount of power from the 5 litre straight six engine. The gear change is 3 speed column change with overdrive. The interior is excellent, extremely comfortable, and a pleasure to sit in. The H power variants where a high power option with an alloy high compression cylinder head, high lift camshaft and the Twin H Power carb system that was highly successful in Nascar racing. This is a car for the American collector, J Lenno has 2 in his collection and rates them highly.
Note: This description is provided by the vendor and unless otherwise stated is 'Not Verified' by Barons or any person employed by Barons. Prospective purchasers are advised to satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of any statements made, whether they be statements of fact or opinion.
Please note that the Classified Advert price is the lower Auction Estimate, and not a Buy It Now Price. The car will not be sold prior to the auction.
