Excalibur Phaeton SS series 1 (Mercedes SSK) ~ Very Rare Collectors Car for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.05) based on 527 votes

Welcome to this auction for a 1969 Excalibur Phaeton SS series 1.  I understand this is one of only 44 SS PHAETONS ever built.  It is not often a true series 1 comes on the market and would make a great addition to anyone's collection or just simply to enjoy it

Sadly this car is being offered for sale due to bereavement.   I am selling this on behalf of the owner's widow and with that in mind I am limited in my knowledge with regards to the vehicle but will answer any questions that I am able and provide you with the following details in good faith.  I have driven this car shortly after it was imported and have been passenger on a couple of occasions.

This car is definitely the one to be noticed in!

My late friend was the second registered owner from new.

The car was purchased and personally imported from America in 2004 and correctly registered with all duties and taxes paid (receipts and letters to support this are present).   All registration documents right from the time of import are present and along with a V5 etc. The car is currently on SORN and this should be taken into account when viewing.

The car will require an MOT as it is now very close to running out. if this is going to be a problem to the purchaser then I am sure I can arrange to have this carried out prior to collection but time should be allowed for this.

The vehicle was manufactured for the Studebaker Motor Company in 1969 and is based on a Studebaker chassis and running gear. powered by a 5. 2 litre 4 barrel carb. 327. 300 horse power V8 Corvette engine through a 3 speed automatic gearbox.

There is some provenance with the car courtesy of the Owners club in America who have been a tremendous help in the past.

This actual car was driven by Brooks Stevens* in a high speed run at Riverside Speedway in the 1970's to show how safe the cars were at speed.

The car has white coachwork with white chassis and lipstick red leather upholstery. All the chrome and bright work is in good condition.

Chrome knock-on wire wheels. Chrome luggage rack.

A considerable amount of money has been spent and invested over the 10 years of its present ownership including but not restricted to a new dashboard and instrument cluster assembly which is truly a vast improvement and of excellent quality.

5 new whitewall tyres as the “Red line” type which were on when purchased were not up to the standards expected.

There are many bills and receipts relating to this car and a full file of all that has been spent along with the old MOT certificates etc.

I have all the letters and communications in relation to the purchase of the car in 2004 and thereafter along with many photographs.

I know that the owner was planning to have the bonnet of the vehicle repainted and in my opinion this is the first job I would have done if I owned it. That being said there is no rust or rot and would be purely for cosmetic reasons and does not detract from its presence and is a real head turner wherever it goes

The car has had a new hood which is black on the outside and tan on the inside.  It comes with side screen's etc.

Due to the delicate nature of the background to this sale and so as to maintain a smooth trouble free sale I require that anyone with 15 or less feedbacks should contact me first before bidding otherwise their bids will be removed.  Please only bid if you are in a position to purchase NOT if you intend to try and negotiate at a later date.  If you win the auction you will be expected to honour that bid and any failure to do so will be reported.

Serious buyers are more than welcome to view and with such a special car I strongly recommend that they do so.  However. please remember the car is on SORN and therefore cannot be taken on the road.

I will attend whilst showing interested parties around the car but strictly by appointment as I live some 20 miles away.

I believe I have described this car fairly and as correct as I can with the limited knowledge I have and it is for offered auction in good faith.

Please note the speedometer reading as this. explained previously. was replaced along with the dashboard and the car has only covered 4. 41 miles since this work was carried out giving a total of approximately 53000 miles.

Please be advised personal effects (motor club badges etc) will be removed prior to dispatch

Please read the following which was extracted from the advertisement by Bob's Classics in America when offered for sale in 2003 which may be of help

This is our 1st series one SS Phaeton car in over 10 years and it's a real beauty.  It's a one owner car and is 35 years old now and always in California and owned by a very well known doctor.   Car was driven 1400 miles per year and now has 49000 miles showing.   Only 44 SS Phaetons were ever built.   It looks awesome in the snow white paint and matching painted frame with nice lipstick red interior. wood dash. red top boot. weathered tonneau cover. nice black top with side curtains. new Dayton chrome wire wheels and new red line radial tires. rear mounted spare. chrome luggage rack. wind deflectors. smoked sun visors. wood steering wheel. leather hood strap. working side supercharger pipes. aluminium hood and cast aluminium bumpers. 4 seater model. centre spot light. am/fm stereo with cassette. automatic transmission. 2650 pounds. 175” long with 109” wheelbase. 4 barrel carb. 327 V8 Corvette engine with 300 horse power – very fast indeed. hand painted pinstripes. all the original owners manuals etc.   Back in the 70's Brooks Stevens* himself. borrowed this car to do a very high speed run at Riverside Speedway to prove how sae the cars were at higher speed has the cycle styled fenders and the style of the famous 1928 Mercedes SSK that are well over a million dollars now.   This car is legal to ship to any country being 35 years old and has none of the emission hassles at all it even has a musical horn and has been in over 30 parades in the San Diego area. weddings etc etc and is well known in that area.   Car is now in the Clearwater/Largo Florida area.   Return to Bobs Classics inc or What's in stock.   Give us a call

* Stevens designed the post-war Skytop Lounge observation cars for the Chicago. Milwaukee. St. Paul & Pacific Railroad's Hiawatha passenger trains. He also designed a series of "Excalibur" racing sports cars in conjunction with Kaiser Motors.  Beginning in the mid-1960s he and his sons began production of the Excalibur. styled after the 1930s-era roadsters. He modernized the Aero-Willys sedans that were offered in Brazil in the 1960s. and there is a very Studebaker Hawk-ish look to the body of these cars.
