For sale at the St. Louis Car Museum is an extremely original Excalibur Series I SSK Roadster finished in rare factory Black over Red! This Excalibur example has been under the careful care of the same owner for the past 25 years and currently displays only 12,900 actual miles on the odometer. In addition, this available Excalibur model comes complete with all original wet weather gear, has been freshly serviced and is ready for immediate use! An outstanding sports car that is one of only 37 example produced that year and one that is packed with performance thanks to it's lightweight design and Chevrolet V8 power!

History Of The 1968 Excalibur SSK Roadster Series I:
The original Excalibur Series I was the brainchild of Studebaker's Brooks Stevens, who took inspiration from the famous 1929 Mercedes-Benz SSK and decided to make a more modern interpretation. Originally designed in 1964 over a Studebaker chassis with their 289ci V8 but due to Studebaker's demise the project was forced in a different direction and connections ultimately landed the car with Corvette power. Taking into account the car's 2100 pounds, along with a, Chevrolet V8 mated to a 4-speed manual, the produced models were sensationally quick and able to accelerate to 60 mph in just over five seconds with a top speed of 160mph! Prices started at $7500, which all but eliminated the average man from buying a new one. Their style and performance have been endured as one of the most stylish performance cars of the 1960's, allowing them to be seen as a very unique opportunity for collectors who are looking to own an elegant automobile with brutish power!

About Our 1968 Excalibur SSK Roadster For Sale:
Offered here is a stellar, all original 1968 Excalibur Series I Roadster finished in factory applied Black Lacquer exterior with an all original Red vinyl upholstered interior! Showing only 12,932 actual miles on the odometer, this beautifully preserved unit comes to us from the former Texas owner of 25 years and is powered by its number's matching Chevrolet 327ci/300hp V8 and Muncie 4-speed manual transmission. In combination with a stout 3.73 Posi-Traction rear axle, it proves to deliver potent performance you'd better be ready for! Additional features include original stainless steel grill cover, stainless steel exhaust system and collectors, polished round tube stainless steel bumpers, 15" chrome Dayton wire spoke knock-off wheels, tinted windscreen, luggage rack, Plexiglas wind wings, wooden 3-spoke sport steering wheel & unique SSK shift knob, trumpet horns, polished bare aluminum hood, faux wood veneer dash, full dash instrumentation with 8K tach and 160mph speedometer, and under dash auxiliary map light. This very special Excalibur Roadster #3041 is uniquely original possessing many of the original factory attributes still intact! These include the red covers on the front and rear springs, inline engine oil filtration system, California emissions equipment with smog pump, Rochester carburetor, factory unused top & side curtains, aforementioned original paint and interior, dash face, original gauges, and 3" lap belts by Irving Air Chute Mfg! Locating an early Series I Excalibur on the open market is a rare occasion, considering only 365 were produced between 1965 thru 1969. Of those, only 265 were true Roadsters and only 168 were equipped with optional full fenders and opening doors! These allowed the exhaust to be re-positioned to exit at the rear, eliminating the hot side exhaust pipes, making for an easier entry/exit of the vehicle, particularly if the convertible top was being utilized.

The prior owner of our available Excalibur model took great pride in his ownership on this particular Roadster and elected to contribute some needed attention to the radiator in 2004 having it re-cored with a 4 row center section. That same year, the Dunlop front brake calipers were re-sleeved by specialist White Post with new cross over pipes and brake pads. The brake booster was rebuilt by Booster Dewey out of Portland, OR, a new master cylinder installed with new DOT3 fluid, a new clutch master cylinder and clutch slave were also replaced. The rear brakes were addressed more recently in 2016 with new, correct Studebaker brake cylinders and Wagner shoes. The tires are newer radials measuring 215/70R15 with very minimal mileage.

Upon arrival to the St Louis Car Museum, due to infrequent and regular exercise in recent years, we opted to fully service this worthy Excalibur to ensure it was 100% road ready for more moderate road time. This included a full coolant swap, brake system fluid flush, new front brake hoses, turning the factory rear drums for the first time, dropping the gas tank to completely clean and flush the inside, replacing the fuel sending unit float sock, rebuilding the Quadrajet carburetor, replacing the correct AC fuel filter, new air filter, going through the valves and adjusting each one individually, new valve cover gaskets, fresh engine oil and filter, along with. fine tuning the ignition system with new spark plugs, plug wires, and fresh drive belts. It continues to amaze our experts how these lightweight, road rockets have escaped the attention of most sports car collectors. If ever given the chance to feel the raw power and intensity these cars deliver to its occupants, we highly recommend the experience! It will quickly prove these Excaliburs have a place in automotive history parked directly next to much more expensive open car roadsters of the period, particularly the AC Cobra is worth mentioning here. NOTE: This car is titled as a 1967 model year.
