1982 Porsche 911SC Targa (European model)

Description

1982 Porsche 911 SC Targa (European Grey Market Import)

This is a great driver quality car with some nice options that set it apart from other SCs. Almost entirely stock except for the mechanical updates you expect to see in an SC. The car has an interesting history with tons of records to read through and much recent work completed.

There are 100 photos accompanying the listing below.
A friend of mine posted all of these photos. plus an additional 80 (all in high resolution) as well as every service record with the car from 1989 – present to his Flickr account. Scroll to the bottom of this description for those links. lots more photos available.

Assigned VIN by State of North Carolina: NCS80930 added to driver's door sill after grey market import. car is referred to by this # on all documents. title. etc.
Euro VIN: WP0ZZZ91ZCS160539 is still present on plate under carpet in front hood above spare tire well.

Exterior Color: Originally Mocchaschwarz. received quality color change repaint to BLACK by previous owner in about 2001. Euro side markers most likely removed then.
Interior: Beige leather

Factory options include: Sport Package: 16” Fuchs wheels. Bilstein sport shocks. fog lights. all-leather interior. sport seats. turbo style spoiler (“tea tray”). Blaupunkt Berlin radio w/ short wave option & gooseneck controller. power accessories and A/C.

Modifications limited to: Carrera chain tensioners. pop-off valve. K-40 hidden radar detector (installed in period).

Exterior: Black paint shines. there are some minor blemishes on the front bumper and some imperfections on the strip across the top of the windshield (see photos). but overall the paint is in extremely good condition. there are no dings or dents on this car! The car was driven very little after the repaint. Turbo tail is in good condition. rubber all the way around is nice. not dried or in need of replacement. Targa seals are supple and seal well. There is no rust on this car. the pan is perfectly intact. Lots of underside photos below.

Interior: In original condition. the interior shows some wear on the seats. mostly on the driver's side seat bolster. they are sport seats and have the deep bolsters. There are no tears or rips in the seats. There are no cracks in the dash. Carpets are also original. This car is equipped with a rare Blaupunkt Berlin AM/FM/Shortwave radio with in dash cassette. It has the ‘gooseneck' controller which works.

Mechanicals: The car drives great. Car just had a $7. 00+ engine out service. see details below and receipts. Car starts immediately and without smoke. It shifts easily. up through the gears as well as when downshifting. The heat works well. it's almost too hot if it's turned all the way up. The car is A/C equipped. but there is no belt on the A/C currently. The tires you see in the photos have been on the car since the 1990s. while they have plenty of tread. they're old. I am having them replaced with brand new tires this week. It will arrive to you with less than 10 miles on a set of new tires.

The car was only driven about 1. 00 miles by its previous owner between 2000 and 2013. It was stored. inside. under a cover with a number of other collector cars he owned until I purchased it in earlier this year.

I recently took it to Further Performance here in Minneapolis. air-cooled Porsche and VW specialists. They removed the engine and sent it out to “Parts for Imports” (engine shop) in Minneapolis. there they:
Disassembled the engine to the block
Honed the cylinders
Installed new head studs
Installed new head gasket
It was not necessary to split the block. they were able to check the bearings and all was in order
Total engine shop invoice: $3. 63. 50

The engine was delivered back to Further where it was installed along with a number of other items. see detailed 2 page invoice below for everything. here are some highlights:
Breather plate gasket. crankshaft seal. air filter. oil filter. spark plugs. transmission input seal. shift selector shaft seal. new heat exchanger. fuel filter. heater hose. complete brake system flush. etc. etc. Total Further Performance invoice: $4. 68. 74

History: The history of this car prior to 1989 is not known. other than that it is a European model (based on the decoded Euro “ZZZ” VIN) and that it received a state issued VIN from the State of North Carolina. I called the NC DMV and spoke with three different people. all of whom could find no record of the car. they told me their ‘system' just doesn't go back that far. There is no evidence of any accident or rust repair anywhere (see photos of car on lift). There are many service records with the car dating from 1989. when the car had 41. 00 miles. There are a few receipts. emissions testing records. etc. bringing it up to 1992.

There is a Bill of Sale dated April 4. 1993 from a dealership in Port Jefferson. NY. The gentleman who bought the car that day (odometer reading was 75. 27) owned it until August of 2000 and kept a sort of ‘diary' with hand written commentary accompanying each service and repair receipt during his ownership. It makes for interesting reading and truly tells the story of the car. There are a lot of receipts showing thousands of dollars spent by an owner who cared about his car.

Maintenance highlights between 1993 and 2000 include (all receipts present. plus every oil change. new brake install. new tire install. etc. etc. copious service records):
12/23/93 @ 81. 45 miles: Rebuilt transmission. new clutch. valve adjustment: $3. 82. 76
7/6/95 @ 90. 91 miles: Installed pop-off valve in air-box
10/26/96 @ 97. 78 miles: Carrera chain tensioners installed: $1. 67. 86

Accidents? The car was involved in a parking lot accident in late 1995. a van backed up and scraped the driver's door and left rear fender. luckily the person who damaged the car left a note. The actual hand written note is included with the service records. It was very minor. the driver's door was scraped as well as the left rear fender. A copy of the police report with a diagram of the incident as well as the body shop estimate and bill are also present (Total bill was $1. 12. 38).

That gentleman sold the car to a friend. an older gentleman. in August of 2000 when the car had approximately 110. 00 miles. There is correspondence between them included in the service records (visit the Flickr link below to see all the service records). This owner passed away in early 2013. I bought the car from his daughter earlier this year.

NOTE: The original VIN decodes as a 1982 model. every piece of paperwork with the car from service receipts to past registrations. emissions testing information. even a bill of sale from the early 1990s and a copy of that old title refers to the car as a 1982 model UNTIL the owner whose family I bought the car from. For some reason his Minnesota title read 1980. DMV typo? When I titled it in my name. the DMV here in Minnesota again. titled it as a 1980. There is no doubt it is a 1982 model. but my clear title. in my name describes the car as a 1980.
