Up for auction is a 1968 Toyota Corona sedan in very good used condition.
It is a four door. four cylinder - 1. 5L. manual sedan with column shift and bench seats. Photos show the car as it is. We uncovered it after many years stored under blankets in my father's garage (the first photo) and then washed the exterior only to remove the dust that had filtered through the blankets during storage (remaining photos).
This car was bought brand new by my grandfather on December 9th 1968 from Grants of Burwood Pty Ltd. He drove it very sparingly until shortly before he passed away in 1987 when my father inherited it and also used it only occasionally for the next 2 years (he always had another car so did not use this one much). It was last registered until December 1989 (Victorian registration number was KDK 137). The car was always garaged from new and the total mileage is 34940 miles (yes. we guarantee that to be genuine). The car was running fine and had no mechanical problems when last driven although that was around 24 years ago.
We have not cleaned the interior. engine or underside of the car so you can see the condition is genuine. The green carpet pieces covering the floor. both front and rear. were put there by my grandfather after he bought the car so the original carpet under it should be 'as new'. The original 'Owners manual' and 'Service warranty and maintenance' booklets are included.
Since the registration expired at the end of 1989 the car has been covered with blankets in my father's garage. He has now decided that it is time for it to go to a new home. We have changed the engine oil and oil filter element (yes. Ryco still make these) and have not done any more to it. The oil was not contaminated with water. coolant or other obvious contaminants. We decided to change it rather than recirculate the old oil through the engine should it start.
The engine turns over and appears to have good compression on all cylinders. The battery needs replacing. but with jumper leads the engine cranks over. It has not been started. I feel that either the fuel is too old or the carburetor needs cleaning. There is fuel in the filter bowl and there is spark at the plugs.
The brake and clutch hydraulics will need work and I believe that the exhaust. or parts of it. will probably need replacing as these usually rust out when stored for extended periods. The handbrake works and the car rolls OK. It will need to be transported on a trailer. flatbed or tow truck by the buyer.
The body and paintwork are in great original condition. There are a few scuffs and scratches in the paintwork. a few minor dents. a little rust along the bottom edge of the driver's door and on some of the chrome trim strips. There is surface rust on the front and back panels below the bumpers. The last 2 photos show the dents in the rear l/h door and the rust along the bottom edge of the r/h front door.
The tyres are cross ply. more than likely the original tyres as is the spare. The original jack and tool kit are in the boot. The tyres were still inflated and only needed to be topped up when we moved the car across to the centre of the garage using a trolley jack so we could move around both sides to wash and photograph the car.
This car would suit a Toyota Corona enthusiast wanting a great early model example as a restoration project with minimal work to do. I would suggest that it may well be a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' to pick up a genuine low mileage example of a 1968 Toyota Corona.
