DESCRIPTION

Horse-drawn steam powered fire pumpers were the standard firefighting apparatus of the late 19 th Century. almost all of them using boiler technology patented by Charles Fox of Cincinnati. Ohio.

Chris Ahrens began building fire apparatus in 1870. forming Ahrens Manufacturing Company in 1875. By 1910 the company had become known as Ahrens-Fox and continued to build from their Cincinnati. OH facility. In 1919 the company introduced and patented the first modern triple-combination. self-propelled pumper.

While other manufacturers used centrifugal or rotary-type pumps. Ahrens-Fox preferred a 4-cylinder piston pump which was well proven in the field and widely known and accepted by fire departments.

Ahrens-Fox. perhaps reflecting Charles Fox's experience as a fire fighter in Cincinnati. became known for the high quality of its apparatus.

Their last example was delivered in 1952 to Hope Hose Company #1 in Tarrytown. New York.

The very original example offered here is a 1921 Ahrens-Fox I-K-4 pumper combination powered by a Monobloc 4-cylinder T-Head engine with dual exhaust valves known as the “Marksman” producing 80 horsepower.

It retains is Register #790 identification body tags and was rated with a 750 gpm flow rate when in use.

For extra starting reliability in all conditions. the factory electrical system consists of a Delco Magneto and Bosch distributor.

It also features traditional right-hand-drive controls. 3-speed manual transmission. chain-driven rear axle. 40-gallon fuel tank. front & rear solid axles with leaf springs. and a mechanical drum brakes.

Apparatus equipment still retained on our well survived I-K-4 include 20' extension ladder. two adjustable pedestal spot lights (1 front/1 rear). forward mounted Sireno electric siren. 12” Vandozen Co. hand bell. hose bin & reel. onboard water/chemical tank. 2. 5” hose. storage bin behind the driver seat. under hood service light with extension cord & oiling can. 3 copper fire extinguishers (Gaurdene. Phister. & Dayton). 2 large diameter hose hook-ups. 1 screened pick up. 4 sprayers. 1 extra spray nozzle. 1 spear pick. 1 pry bar. 1 ax. and few more bits and pieces in the storage bins.

The front mounted piston pump featured the easily identifiable Ahrens-Fox spherical air chamber.

Our example was first in service with the Cincinnati Fire Department as part of Engine Company 25 on Gest Street (referenced from “Cincinnati Fire History” by Mersch & Mueller) before later traveling to a neighboring community in Lawrenceburg. IN many years later.

The new L. F. D. lettering remains proudly on the hood today.

It was decommissioned and made its way back in Cincinnati. Ohio to be parked in a private collection before making its way to this showroom in 2013.

We rebuilt the ignition system. replaced the fluids & battery. and put this Ahrens Fox back to running condition.

Its overall patina is outstanding and the paint continues to hold gloss. and the balance of the original pinstipping and decoration can be seen throughout! We have not made any efforts to utilize the actual pump. but it appears to be all intact like the rest of the truck.

It will come with a clear Ohio title and an engine service parts manual.

The measurements are 21' long. 8. 5' high. and 7'4” wide.

Please feel free to call with additional questions or to schedule an opportunity to inspect in person.

We look forward to working with you!
