DETAILS OF THIS RARE CAR:

This 1929 Studebaker President Model "FE" Seven Passenger Touring is considered a full CCCA Classic. Only 60 of this size President 7 Passenger Touring car were produced. This President is an "FE-L2" model which was the factory designation for a model which was produced by the factory with side mount fenders and wire wheels. The other two surviving President Tourers in the U. S. . car #19 and #35 are both "FE-L1" models (Rear mounted spare and wood spoke wheels. even though they were converted to dual sidemounts and wire wheels by their owners in the 1960's) and are located on the east coast in private collections and there is one other car. which is car #21 and it is also was a factory wood spoke wheel model and it is in the private collection of a collector in Lithuania.  The President for sale here is car #57 and it is the only other surviving one remaining out of the 60 built. as well as the only remaining example of a Factory dual side mount wire wheel model.  It has wire spoke wheels. Dual side mounted spare wheels. black fenders and a dark blue body with red leather interior. Has a "straight Eight" 337 cu inch engine @115 horsepower and sits on a 135" wheelbase.

This is the largest model Studebaker built during these years and has jump seats for extra passengers that fold down out of back of the front seat. luggage rack with trunk which contains 3 suitcases. running board red and green port and starboard lights. “Studebaker” engraved step plates for all four doors. dual side mount Art Deco sunburst mirrors. 1929 rear passenger division windshield.

One other special feature about this current car is that in 1929 Studebaker was the featured car of the Indy 500. There were 3 options you could get with your President for that year. a 3. 1 geared rear end (to make it go faster at cruising speeds). "Finned" brake drums for high speed braking to dissipate the heat. and a high compression head. This car has the high speed rear end and finned brake drums. This car recently (Sept. 2012) took second place at the Iron Stone Winery Concourse De'Elegance for best unrestored class.

HISTORY OF CAR SINCE NEW:

This 1929 Studebaker President "FE" 7 Passenger Tourer was originally sold to Paramount Movie Studios by the Paul Hoffman Studebaker Dealership in Los Angeles and used to chauffeur dignitaries between the studio lot and local hotels. In addition to being used in the 1932 movie Shanghai Express with Marlene Dietrich. it was also featured in the 1932 Movie "Hot Saturday" which was Cary Grant's first leading role in a movie. and used as a parade car for the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. After use by Paramount studios the car was sold to Bishop E. Shafer of 2400 Crenshaw Blvd. . Los Angeles who passed away in 1947. The car ended up on the used car lot of Atlantic Auto & Truck Sales. 19020 So. Figueroa. Gardena. CA. (Los Angeles County) and was sold by owner Mike McManus to Robert & Helen Branton of Los Angeles for $200 in November of 1955.

At the time of the purchase of this rare vehicle. Robert Branton Sr. owned a local business called "Branton Auto Electric" located at 9801 Venice Blvd. in Los Angeles and at the time was also the personal mechanic of Jimmy Durante. According to the family. Durante used to joke around on his Radio show about his "crazy mechanic Al. and was referring to Robert Branton. Robert died in 1981 and his widow kept the car until I purchased it from her. One of the pictures in this listing was taken in 1966 and show Robert in the driver's seat with his son. and two grandchildren. The car today has the same paint and interior as it did when that picture was taken. The car had a 1920's porcelain sign that was found in the car that said "Paramount Studios - private property" but I no longer have it but it still has a large metal case which has writing raised in the metal sides which says "Players-Lasky Corporation" and "Paramount Studios" on each side.

The Branton family moved to Oklahoma in 1960 and Robert Branton Sr. became city Manager of Wetumka Oklahoma. The car was used in parades and still chauffeured dignitaries such as Oklahoma Senator James McDaniel. The vehicle remained in the Branton family until February 1997 when it was sold by Helen Branton to me. Information and documentation obtained from Historical Archives. the Antique Studebaker Club and vehicle owners. I have photos of the car in both movies. as well as several original sales receipts. paperwork. and photos of this car spanning most of its life.

MECHANICS:

The car is in unrestored condition and is a driver. A new owner can either restore it to show quality. or just drive it and take it to shows as I have done and enter it into the “unrestored” classes or just take the family for rides on the weekends or touring with other period car enthusiasts. I have driven this car at freeway speeds from Sacramento to Bakersfield and also to Red Bluff. Ca. without any problems. The car is a strong runner and I have never had any mechanical issues with the car.

The previous owner Robert Branton Sr. who as previously mentioned was the Mechanic for Jimmy Durante. reportedly went through the entire motor in the 1960's. He died in 1981 and it sat in storage until I purchased it in 1997. When I got the car I dropped the oil pan. replaced the original pot metal oil pump housing with a reproduction solid brass one (the oil pressure gauge shows 40psi out of 50). the radiator was completely gone through. the gas tank was pulled and boiled out and coated. new gas lines were installed. generator was rebuilt and the water pump with machined sealed bearings in place of the old style packing nut (however this was done so it still appears original)

AUCTION PHOTOS:

Because this car is always garaged and taken well care of. as you can see thru the photo's they are a mix of recent photos an older photos and the car has stayed in the same presentable condition throughout the years. The first four photos are exactly as the car is today. Photo #5 is as it was in 1967 and Photo #6 is as it appeared in the Cary Grant movie “Hot Saturday” Photos #12 and 13 are from last years Concourse De'Elegance at Iron Stone Winery and other photos show current outside and interior pictures. as well as some documents from the cars past history. unfortunately Ebay only allows 24 photos so I have tried to cover as much as possible on a car with a rich historical background.

MARKET VALUE:

Because of the scarcity of this car. and private collectors realizing how rare they are. of the four remaining 1929 President Tourers. none have ever gone across the auction block because they have been quickly snatched up privately on the rare occasions when they have come available so there is no notable reference from auction prices other than the sell of a 1929 Commander Tourer 10 years ago which is two model sizes smaller than  the FE President offered here and that Commander had been installed with an un-original "second" cowl. It was valued at $125k and sold at that auction for $93. 00. however. this just gives you an idea of what this car should be valued well above and a classic definitely well worth the investment. If you have any further questions please let me know. Winner responsible for making pick-up or shipping arrangements. I will assist in any way I can to help facilitate the car getting to you. A 20% deposit of the car must be paid at auction end with full payment made with 72 hrs of end of auction unless otherwise agreed upon before close of auction. Car may be sold to another bidder if car is not paid for in full within the time frame listed. This car is being advertised in other venues as well. so if car sells through another source this auction may be prematurely terminated before the end of this Ebay auction.

See below for comparison price on a lesser size model which sold for 93k. Refer to lot #274 1929 Commander Dual Cowl;

Did the running board lights come in one green and one red? I have a pair and am unaware if they are a set.
