1979 Volkswagen Kabriolet for sale
Current customer rating:
This rustfree car needs to be rescued and restored as it is one of the last of the classic beetles. The last classic VW sedans were built in 1977. Karmann had enough chassis to build Kabriolets until 1979. This car is supposed to be one of the last 800 or so that were imported to the USA.
The indicated mileage is probably too low and should have a 1 in front of it. I can't be sure as it was so nice when we bought it.
It was bought in California from a garage that specialized in VW restoration. It was delivered to Las Vegas. NV and we drove it home to Santa Fe. NM. We seldom drove it. probably no more than 2500 miles. The electronic brain that controls the fuel injection system. among other things. quit three times. I trailered it from New Mexico. where we were living. and had an electric fuel pump and a carburetor installed at a nearby shop that specializes in VWs. It was never registered in Texas. so we never drove it. One day it wouldn't start. The engine wouldn't turn over. So I bought a new battery and it still wouldn't crank.
I trailered it to the same shop. The shop owner called to tell me that when they dropped the engine and opened it up they found that ants had crawled in the exhaust. through open valves and built nests. So I had a 1500 cc engine installed.
The paint has some bubbles. there is some surface rust. but no holes the back floor is solid. the top has holes from sitting under trees (but a tarp is kept over it). It has one new tire. The others were and are holding air well. but should be replaced because of UV aging.
The headlights. radio and horn do not work. The glass and interior are decent. I installed new upholstery panels on the doors and rear quarters. The engine runs at medium to high rpm but won't idle.
With a moderate investment it could be a $10. 00 classic. On my retirement income I just can't afford it.
So I hope somebody out there will rescue it and breathe new life into it.
