1963 Vauxhall FB vx4/90

See my Large Pictures below.

This was the first true sporting model from Vauxhall since the famous 30/98 ceased production. The unique side chrome surrounded side flashing and different grille and rear light arrangement were unique to the car.

The VX4/90 used the same 1508cc engine as the lesser Victor but by fitting an alloy head. EN12 steel crankshaft. twin Zenith carburettors and with a higher lift camshaft the engine produced an amazing 44% more power than the standard at 81. 5bhp. It was painted red by the factory to differentiate this engine from standard Vauxhall engines.

This gave the car a top speed of 90mph – hence the name. Disc brakes were also standard along with 14ins wheels. separate front seats along with full instrumentation including a rev counter.

The “90” monika would also be used for uprated Viva engines painted red that were also supposed to be capable of 90mph although this was not always the case. The VX Four Ninety name was only used for a brief time when it was changed to VX4/90.

The car was taken off the road to have some welding done and the engine and gearbox were removed as was the carpet to make the restoration easier. The car drove perfectly before this was done. The work done so far was done by an ex- Ferrari mechanic to the highest standard but unfortunately money ran out and there is still welding to do to the front of the floors where it meets the sill and at the front of the sills. Apart from that the car is remarkably solid and a good basis to make perfect.

It is a genuine two previous owner car. the second owner purchased it when it was only one year old and he kept it garaged for the next 45 years until I bought it.

The original engine runs perfectly; it is low mileage and runs smooth with no blue smoke. You will note the modern alternator and alluminium pulley making the charging system more efficient in modern traffic.

The interior is also in really good condition with only a very small rip about one inch long on the driver's seat. Normally these vinyl seats go smooth with wear but these haven't which just shows the genuine low mileage of the car. You will note in the pictures the webbing has failed and the seats are sagging a bit but new webbing is a simple push-on exercise.

The car is 100% complete I have even kept the carpets to use as a pattern for a new replacement.

The registration is transferable and valued by reg transfers at £2. 00 but it would be such a shame to separate them.

All in all a great car but in need of some further restoration to complete. The main picture was taken last year before restoration was started. As you can see the body was pretty much rust free beforehand.

The engine was removed as part of the restoration and is stored in Addlestone Surrey. The car is in Blandford. Dorset and collection of both can be at any of those locations at no extra cost.
