Over the years our clients have overwhelmingly been appreciative of our many unaltered large pixel photos posted in our ads and our feedback has been that it is very rare that a seller will post all but the most flattering of photographs. We prefer to expose the complete roll of film taken of the car. in sometimes unflattering but natural sunlight. in order for our prospective buyers to be able to see true and reliable images of the car advertised and that is the reason for some seemingly duplicated shots. We trust you will agree.
West Coast Classics are proud to present a very fine example of this very desirable original California and still boasting its original California 'Black License Plates' 1969 Buick Sport Wagon wagon with the optional and highly desirable big block 400 cid 340HP 4 Barrel V8 engine. the same engine used in the Buick GS series cars and a rare and expensive $348 option in 1969! With the optional forward facing third row seat to make room for no less than 8 passengers comfortably. the exclusive 11 windowed wagon topped both Buick and its Corporate sister wagon the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser popularity polls for years. since this particular bodystyle's 1968-69 production run. This rare sports wagon retailed for a whopping almost $4. 00 when new. more than either the Oldsmobile 442 Coupe or Convertible and this particular example was also fully loaded at great original expense with factory options including: Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission. power steering. power front disc brakes. power seat. tilt steering wheel. AM radio. climate control automatic air conditioning. deluxe steering wheel. drop or swing out 'dual action' tailgate door. tint glass observation style roof and roof windows. custom padded seat cushions. self adjusting brakes. Soft Ray tinted glass and central and tailgate dome lights.
The Buick Sport Wagon was marketed as "Buick's sporty wagon for the family" and with the optional Big Block 400/340HP V8 engine wasn't it ever?! Along with its Corporate sister. the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser Wagon. which was Oldsmobile's entry into the personal luxury market built on the Super Eighty-Eight's 123-inch wheelbase frame. this was a station wagon manufactured and marketed by both Buick and the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors from 1964 into the seventies and instantly recognizable for its fixed-glass and roof-mounted skylight over its second-row seating. with sun visors for the second row passengers. a raised roof behind the skylight and lateral glass panels over the rear cargo area along the raised roof. This raised-roof. skylight wagon body style was shared with between the Buick Sport Wagon and subsequent Oldsmobile mid-size wagons featured a skylight concept as did the 1991-92 full-size Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser wagon and the 1991-96 Buick Roadmaster wagon.
The 1964-69 Buick Sport Wagons featured an optional forward-facing third row seat. which had been the norm until the late 50s but was unusual for car-based wagons. which more often favored rear or side-facing seats at the time. These particular three seat models had a 44466 designated VIN # as opposed to the two seat 44456 wagons. The 1971-76 full size GM clamshell models would also use a forward-facing third row. and employ a similar elevated roof over the cargo hold. though without the skylight. A major restyling of the GM A-body car line for 1968 replaced the split skylight with a one-piece skylight and stretched the wheelbase from 120" to 121". From 1968 to 1972. two 350 V8 were available but the car could be ordered with a larger 400 cubic-inch V8 from the 442 muscle car optional in 1968-69 and a 455 cubic-inch V8 from the 442 available from 1970 to 1972. In 1969. the 'Dual-Action' tailgate was first offered. as standard equipment on the three-row models and as optional equipment on the two-row models (as in this particular car). In 1970. a redesign reshaped much of the exterior sheet metal. making the edges and curves sharper and although it closely resembled the 1968-69 models. it is essentially considered to be a second-generation car with the dashboard also being completely redesigned. The renown GM Skywagon Club recognizes the 1970-72 models as 'Generation 2A'. Famously. in 1972. a small number of 1972 Vista Cruisers were modified by 'Hurst Performance' for support car duties at the 1972 Indianapolis 500 and these cars were also equipped with 455 cubic-inch Rocket V8's. along with the official pace car. a 1972 Hurst/Olds. also powered by a 455 V8. Two are known to survive as of 2012. a press car and one other.
Repainted in its original 'Copper Mist Metallic' (Color code 65) paint and with a matching and stunningly mostly all original 'Dark Sandalwood' interior. this wagon looks extremely impressive with the original dashboard itself. original GM seat belts and harnesses. the headliner. the carpets and all the seats all in absolutely exceptional condition throughout! All the chrome work is also in very good condition and the original spare wheel and jack are still in their rear compartment. The car was sold on 2/10/1969 at 'Bob Schneider Herrara Buick' of Oakland. California and still boasts its original factory air cleaner with 400 engine logos and its original owners manual with Protecto-Plate. 1969 new vehicle warranty card and original letter of Congratulations from 'Herrara Buick'. It was always obviously garaged and has no signs of any accidents or history of any rust with its all original factory solid undercarriage. it is the rare three row seat optioned car with the 'Dual action' tailgate and power rear window and has its original 400 4V V8 engine!
This particular car drives absolutely magnificently - must be driven to be fully appreciated - drives straight as an arrow with no strange road wobbles. shakes or rattles - a truly remarkable daily driver that will really give any modern day sports car a run for it's money! The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears and the temperature always remains cool!
This is a rare opportunity to own a great daily driving example of a rare three row seat 1969 Buick Sport Wagon Wagon with the highly desirable and legendary 400/340HP V8 GS muscle car engine. the dual action tailgate and power steering. power brakes and factory air conditioning - it is one very desirable. collectible and unabused example of one of the most outstanding station wagons ever built and a beautiful and classic GM design with no less than eleven windows to boot!
