In the late fifties and early sixties Studebaker was the US distributor for Mercedes Benz. Industrial designer Brook Stevens did some design work for Studebaker and later was commissioned to build a special car for the 1964 New York Auto Show. He designed a concept car nicknamed the Mercerbaker to celebrate the Studebaker – Mercedes alliance.

The Mercerbaker borrowed 1928-1932 Mercedes SSK styling cues and blended them with current Studebaker mechanicals. It was what Stevens called a modern classic and was the first of a genre which became known as neoclassics.

Prior to the New York show. Studebaker changed Presidents and the new boss decided not to display the Mercerbaker on their stand. Stevens scrambled and found space in the lobby of the Auto Show to display his freshly christened Excalibur SSK. The car was enthusiastically accepted and Stevens found himself in the automobile business.

Stevens' was a frustrated racer and designed the Excalibur with a serious performance edge. Production Excaliburs had a curb weight of just 2350 pounds and a Chevrolet 300 hp. 327 base engine. Excaliburs could be ordered with higher horsepower engines including a supercharged version. The combination gave the Excalibur a power to weight ratio that was similar if not better than a 289 Shelby Cobra.

Hold on tight when you hit the gas. Car and Driver magazine found 60 mph came in just 5. 4 seconds. That was rare air in 1966 and even today can be a handful.

Our Excalibur. #1009 is a SSK model with a 300 hp 327 V 8 motor. automatic transmission. cycle fenders. and ground shaking side exhaust. We purchased the car from the 2 nd owner. a Mennonite who ran a Studebaker repair shop in Pennsylvania. Not surprising. he didn't drive the car much and the mileage is just 27. 38 miles.

A burgundy frame and burgundy interior complement the silver coachwork. The paint is older but still looks great. The seats look excellent and everything is clean and nicely detailed. The car is complete with top and side curtains.

The more that you know about Series I Excaliburs. the better you'll like them. Rumble into the next Cars and Coffee with this bad boy and the all the eyes will be on you.
