The opportunity to obtain a 1-owner from new GT6 is an absolute rarity these days – so don't let this car pass you by! Here at RMC Classics, we feel privileged to offer this car on the market for the first time, and will be very sorry to see it leave the workshop!
This 1974 Mk3 example, painted in Magenta, was bought new from Henlys Triumph of Manchester by professional engineer John, for his wife Audrey. Since then, the car has covered just 58,000 miles. Due to the owner's advancing age, the car has seen less and less usage over the past few years and they've come to the reluctant decision to let go. The car is remarkably original and I'd go as far as to say you'll struggle to find a car that's as original and un-messed with. It truly is the opportunity of a lifetime!
Complete with original bill of sale, all of the tax discs from new, along with various other bits of paperwork – and even a copy of the GT6 brochure!
The panelwork is all incredibly sound, and all original - practically unheard of these days, with a British Leyland product! The panels all fit very nicely with no door drop. The bonnet is in exceptional order, as are the door bottoms, tailgate trailing edge, etc. The bodyshell, again, is incredibly original – thanks to being generously coated with the Ziebart treatment when new – this has really saved the car. Yes, it's had some minor paintwork over the years but the car has never had a serious restoration – simply because it doesn't need it!
The car presents very well, with a deep shine throughout - and certainly grabs everyone's attention! The leading edge of the roof is in excellent order with only some very minor cosmetic bubbling, the roof gutters are excellent. The two original front valence panels are showing their age a little with some corrosion (see pictures 33 and 34 in the extra gallery on my website), but these are readily available and easy to replace – completely cosmetic and the issue can't really be seen externally, anyway. The chassis appears to be solid throughout.
The interior is, again, incredibly original and is in very good order indeed. The seat covers, dashboard, door cards, carpets and headlining all look fantastic – even the steering wheel and dash-top are great. All of the switchgear works, including the heated rear screen, heater blower and temperature controls. John fitted a central locking kit to the car 30-odd years ago, and this still works perfectly. An electric aerial is also fitted, along with a 1980s tape-cassette player.
Mechanically, the car is, again, very original. Over recent years it's had various minor works completed on it, including a new water pump and pulley, carburettor refresh and a few other things. It's fitted with electronic ignition and a stainless exhaust – otherwise, it's exactly as it left the factory. It pulls strongly, stops well, the non-overdrive gearbox selects gears nicely. The rear axle is nice and quiet with no nasty whines. The car sits nice and level. The engine bay has been coated with Ziebart protection since new – I've left this on as it's part of the car's history but the new owner may decide to spruce up the engine bay, which wouldn't be a difficult thing to do.
Please don't expect this to be a concours show-winning, over-restored car – however it's a really well preserved, incredibly original example – a true time warp, and in my opinion, a much more attractive ownership prospect. A similar 1-owner car sold for over £20k a couple of weeks ago at auction (lot 237, Historics Auctioneers 25/09/2021), so this car really does represent excellent value for money for someone looking for a car to enjoy and make small improvements. These cars are climbing in price at the moment so it'd make a very shrewd investment for the right person.
Some spares that John has collected over the years are included as part of the sale.
