1973 Bay Window RARE 12 seater RHD Double Slider!
Ok, so when it comes to rare buses this one is way up there on the list!
This right hand drive, UK market, double sliding door Kombi was built in June 1973 and underwent the crazy rare, in house, Volkswagen 12 seater conversion whilst still on the factory floor.
Finished in glorious Neptune Blue, it was sold in the West Midlands to a gent named Stanley Crux who, after finishing working as a West Midlands bus driver, started working for Tarmac a local construction company first as a tipper driver, and later as a carpenter. Stanley used the bus as a taxi for work mates, for taking friends and family to church, and for collecting family and friends from the airport on arrival from Jamaica. The quad back seat, triple middle, 2 bulkhead flippers, and triple front seating arrangement would have been perfect for kindly Stanley to ferry people around his local town of Wolverhampton.
When Stanley sadly passed, the completely original bus was sold by his nephew, (who remembers visiting his local Wednesbury Volkswagen dealer with Stanley when he originally bought the bus), to a UK VW enthusiast who stripped it and sent it to a restorer for the welding work to be undertaken. Losing interest in the project, he then sold it to me and I sent it to a local paint shop for a full rotisserie media blast and shiny new Neptune Blue paint job.
This little bay window bus is in immaculate condition and seems to come with all its parts ready for reassembly including glass, dash parts, interior panels, etc, (although I should caveat this as with any typical project there may be one or two small things that have been lost along the way). All the rare seats are included, albeit stripped for paint. The frames have been painted in their original silver grey whilst the beige upholstery is a little tatty and will require work.
Mechanically, I was told that the original engine is the powerful 2 ltr type 1 motor which drove it into the workshop for its strip down and still turns freely. The manual box seems good, but obviously all mechanics will need going through prior to reassembly.
Based in Sturminster Newton, Dorset, UK, and happy with anyone coming to view the bus, or I can send a LOT more photos to interested parties.
Usual ebay stuff please: Less than 10 feedback then please contact me before bidding / £500 deposit on auction end / Full payment and collection within 2 weeks or as arranged with me.
Thanks for looking, and good luck!
Ben
