1920 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Brewster Salamanca

Chassis number: 16LE

Registration number: RE1657

Despatched from the Derby works in 1920 via the SS Celtic, the car was sent to Rolls Royce America. There the magnificent Rolls Royce Custom Coachworks body (Number 2006) by Brewster was fitted which it wears today and was delivered to its' first owner Mr John L Roe of Madison Avenue New York.

The car was purchased two decades ago by the current owner & has been maintained without regard to cost & is in impecable condition starting instantly & driving beautifully. Gear changes once warm are easy & precise. The engine pulls well in all gears & gives 15PSI oil pressure under load whilst running at a water temperature between 60 & 70 degrees. A large assortment of bills come with the car from the usual experts including Jonathan Harley, Alan Glew, P & A Wood & Fiennes engineeering. There is also a bill for a new stainless steel exhaust. It was noted that the car is running its original pistons with each being stamped with engine number, & weight which have been fitted with new rings & brass stop pegs.

The body is a simply amazing affair affording the ability to run fully closed, as an open sedanca, as an open Landaulette or indeed as a fully open tourer making it versatile in the extreme. The roof cunningly folds all the way down with various upright parts being removable & the rear window door frames folding inside the car doors. No other example of this body is known to exist.

It is known that the car was owned early on in Life by Mr John Ringling of Barnum & Bailey Circus fame, A man who kept a variety of both pre war & post war Silver Ghosts at his Sarasota Mansion in Florida. After his tenure the car is known to have resided for many years inside a Glass case in a Hotel Foyer in Arkansas. Indicated mileage is just 30,000 & the car most certainly drives like a low mileage example with a tight feel to the body & zero play in the steering.

During the current tenure the car has made two major trips including the re-enactment of the Scottish Reliabaility trials where the car covered 2500 trouble free miles over three weeks & has also sojourned in France several times. Some £75,000 or so was spent upon the car in the 1990's to put the car in tip top condition that we find it in today. £4000 was recently spent with Marque Specialist Alan Glew removing the blocks & having new valves lapped in etc in addition to the blocks being re-painted. The car thus presents very well under the bonnet.

To the interior is black leather up front in very good lightly patinated condition. The rear seats are excellent buttoned cord cloth extending also two the twin occasional seats allowing for carriage of 7 people in all. A useful fold out luggage grid is fitted to the rear of the car. A wind up division is also located in the centre bulkhead separating rear occupants from the driver whom may be addressed by the speaking tube. The usual American Drum type headlamps are fitted to the front of the car.

This is a Ghost which simply has to be seen & driven to appreciate how good it is. On the road it behaves beautifully & has real presence & a sense of occasion wherever it alights garnering the respect & deference of lesser road users encountering it on back roads. Well known within 20 Ghost Club Circles the car is now ready for its next custodian during its 100th year of existance.
